Kate Atherton writes for Bleeding Cool:
On the surface of it, At the Mountains of Madness appears to have all those magic ingredients for a summer blockbuster – Jim Cameron and Don Murphy producing, Tom Cruise starring, 3D, lost cities, the Antarctic, prehistoric species awoken from their slumber to wreak havoc on clumsy mortals. Filming was set to start in July 2011 under the control of director and writer Guillermo Del Toro but an interview between Del Toro and Deadline reveals that At The Mountains of Madness is at best delayed and at worst dead. The reason being that Universal can not support an expensive blockbuster ($150 million) that carries an R certificate due its ‘intensity’.
Del Toro clearly was not to be shifted on that rating:
I think the R should be worn like a badge of merit in promoting the movie. To say, this is not a gory movie, not a movie full of profanity or violence, but it’s a really intense movie. It’s all what you do with what you’re given.
It sounds as if Tom Cruise still supports this project but, whether it is indefinitely postponed or definitely shelved, Guillermo Del Toro has had to turn his attention elsewhere. It has fallen on Pacific Rim, a science fiction movie in which humanity unites to defeat an alien menace. Pacific Rim is written by Travis Beacham (Clash and Wrath of the Titans) but while Del Toro is not able to reveal any details he can say that it is not to be confused with Godzilla. Not necessarily the best of build ups.
Back in October 2010, Guillermo Del Toro was first associated with Pacific Rim by Latino Review, but now that we have confirmation that it will indeed be Del Toro’s next movie and filming should begin in September this year, one can’t help but wonder if Del Toro’s heart will be elsewhere, either At the Mountains of Madness – or perhaps with The Hobbit.
Editor’s note: Au Revoir, Mountains. Ever since I read a draft of the script, I’ve been in love with this project. I’ll be waiting for it, for as long as it takes…
