Idris Elba Talks “Boycott Thor” (With Shiny New Picture)

Hey racists, this picture’s for you. The Hollywood Reporter have spoken to Idris Elba, that actor cast as Heimdall, about the Boycott Thor controversy. Unfortunately, they’ve only brought back a single quote:

We have a man who has a flying hammer and wears horns on his head. And yet me being an actor of African descent playing a Norse god is unbelievable? I mean, Cleopatra was played by Elizabeth Taylor, and Gandhi was played by Ben Kingsley.

And Noah Ringer played Aang in The Last Airbender. Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh were in Memoirs of a Geisha. Oh – and Reece Shearsmith was Papa Lazarou. Don’t forget that one.

The feature ends with what THR call a Snapshot of Black Hollywood 2011. It’s not exactly a list of thrilling, can’t-miss propositions I’m afraid. I’m put in mind of an interview from 2009 or so in which Mark Lawson asked Denzel Washington if Hollywood was still racist. Washington’s reaction was tactful, but I’m sure he must have been far more taken aback than I was, and my jaw was hanging.

Let’s give Lawson the benefit of the doubt and assume he was just playing devil’s advocate.
