Karate Kid's Harald Zwart To Direct Universal's Bakugan Movie

Kate Atherton writes for Bleeding Cool:

Making a regular appearance in the Top 10 of the Comic Network, anime series Bakugan Battle Brawlers airs six days a week. Apparently, boys just can't get enough of it, or the game Bakugan that inspired it. We're informed (by the Bakugan people) that the game is regularly voted Toy of the Year. Soon, it will have its own movie.

The Wrap has revealed that Universal has selected Harald Zwart to be the film's director. Norwegian Zwart is best known for the unexpected success of The Karate Kid, a film which attracted a similar audience in large numbers.

Bakugan is a game of marbles that grow into monsters when they roll across cards. While this seems to give very little away in terms of plot and characterisation, according to the original press release (here via Bakugan), producer Scott Stuber (Scott Pilgrim, Love and Other Drugs) said: "Bakugan has all the elements of a great movie". Universal's Donna Langley added: "Bakugan provides an excellent concept and storyline for an action packed motion picture thriller".*

Whether the film will be animated, 3D and/or real life action remains to be seen but what is known is that young boys will flock to it while the rest of us scratch our heads and are still none the wiser about what on earth Bakugan is about.

*Editor's Note: If so, why won't they tell us what these elements, concept and storyline are?
