It’s not out till Wednesday. But a copy of the first issue of the new series 27 from Image Comics has just sold on eBay for $35 as a preorder. And more are selling around $28 – $25. This one has already received 12 bids up to $8.50 with four days to go.
It transpires that the print run for 27 #1 had to be set before the Final Order Cut Off date (or FOC) because its size, like Viking, means it has to be printed overseas to be economical.
And while a print run based on initial orders through Diamond Previews was set with a relatively massive overprint, interest in the comic since then has grown massively, which led to a far-larger-than-expected increase in orders the week of FOC.
And since the system cannot distinguish between initial orders and orders placed before the FOC date, all those retailer orders are now subject to the comic being allocated by Diamond, somewhere between two thirds and the five-sevenths mark.
Add to that a bunch of post-FOC advance reorders not being filled and you have a squeeze in demand for this comic from both sides. And people already talking silly money.
A second print of #1 has been arranged to ship alongside the second issue. But that’s still some time off… will this book be $50 by next weekend?
