Some of these are old news some of them are real surprises, all of them have signed on the dotted line for a trip to Middle Earth. If only we knew exactly where Middle Earth was going to be…
I’ll run pictures under bit of casting.
Martin Freeman will play Bilbo, yer actual Hobbit. I think he’s been linked to this role for at least three years now.
Richard Armitage will play Thorin Oakenshield, the leader of The Company (this story’s dwarfish equivalent of The Fellowship).
Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky will play Kili and Fili. I’m going to find it very hard to get over Kazinsky at first, I think, distracted by his Eastenders persona.
Graham McTavish will play Dwalin.
John Callen and Peter Hambleton will play Oin and Gloin. If you have a picture of Callen, send it over – the interwubz didn’t, so here’s just Mr. Hambleton.
Stephen Hunter will play Bombur.
Mark Hadlow will play Dori.
Still in talks for roles are Stephen Fry and Saoirse Ronan, and Bill Nighy is said to be negotiating to provide the voice of Smaug. Close your eyes and listen to him playing the greedy guy in this clip then tell me he wouldn’t be perfect.
All of these details comes courtesy of Deadline, where Mike “Top Darts” Fleming was also able to get some quotes from Peter Jackson on the whys and wherefores of these casting decisions:
Despite the various rumors and speculation surround this role, there has only ever been one Bilbo Baggins for us. There are a few times in your career when you come across an actor who you know was born to play a role, but that was the case as soon as I met Martin. He is intelligent, funny, surprising and brave — exactly like Bilbo and I feel incredibly proud to be able to announce that he is our Hobbit.
Richard is one of the most exciting and dynamic actors working on screen today and we know he is going to make an amazing Thorin Oakenshield. We cannot wait to start this adventure with him and feel very lucky that one of the most beloved characters in Middle Earth is in such good hands.
…and there’s more. As I said, top darts.
