Graphic Novel Aims To Defeat Terrorism

Lazuardi Birru is a Jakarta-based non-profit publisher has just published Ketika Nurani Bicara, or When Conscience Speaks, a130-page graphic novel with the intention to prevent Indonesian youth into being radicalised by terrorist-supporting groups.

It's main focus is expressing the importance of peace, the interpretation of jihad being an internal not external struggle an exposing groups that extol violence.

Aimed at young Indonesians, it tells the story of the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people. The novel has three true viewpoints, that of Ali Imron, one of the terrorists who has now repented and is serving life imprisonment, Haji Agus Bambang Priyanto who helped rescue people after the bombing and and Hayati Eka Laksmi, whose husband was killed. They are all based on interviews with the real life people, though it is likely that the chapter based on interviews with Ali Imron will be the most controversial.

Ten thousand copies have been printed and are being distributed free through Islamic schools, universities and libraries across Indonesia. The book can also be downloaded here in Sudanese, Javanese, Malay and Arabic.
