Is Everything Finally Going To Come Together For A Third Bill & Ted Movie?

Now both Alex and Winter and Keanu Reeves have gone on the record and said the same thing – that they’re trying to get a third Bill & Ted misadventure off of the ground – I might start getting my hopes up a little.

The first quote came from Winter, a couple of weeks back, when he was speaking at LA’s New Beverly cinema between screenings of Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey. Here’s how AICN put it:

He [Winter] said that the three of them, Keanu, Ed Solomon and himself, have been kicking ideas around. First and foremost, they don’t wanna make a crap movie, as he put it. They’ve even had ideas that even children wouldn’t be able to see the movie. If they come up with a story that they feel worthwhile, it will happen.

Now, MTV have published a new interview with Keanu in which he says much the same thing:

We’re trying. Alex and I are still friends and we’re talking, and we’re talking to Chris and Ed. They’re going to try and see if they can write something. To me, I’d love to play the role. I’d love to work with Alex and Chris and Ed again. We’ll see what they do. If it’s a film that can stand up on its own … and I’m meeting people now, they’ve shown the film to their kids. We just seek to entertain, and if that could be something that could be worthwhile, on its own…

The balls are in your courts, Chris and Ed.

Should the film happen, I’d like to think Winter would get first refusal at directing. I must recommend his* 1993 comedy Freaked, a cartoonish, vaudevillian caper-meets-tall tale starring a series of vividly designed, creatively realised freaks – from a sockheaded man with the voice of Bobcat Goldthwait to Mr. T as a bearded lady. And it has some of the best opening credits I’ve ever seen. Buy it now before it ends up costing $100 a copy.

Freaked had the tagline “A Thinking Man’s Stupid Comedy” and that pretty much nails it. And that’s exactly what I want from another Bill & Ted too.

*Co-directed with Tom Stern. Don’t know what terms he’s on with Alex these days, but maybe he could come along and direct/co-direct to lighten the load, allow Alex to concentrate on acting? Ach! Listen to me daydream…
