Whales Vs. Dolphins: This Time It’s Personal

There’s a pair of marine mammal movies coming our way. I guess there’s something… in the water. Boom boom! Thank you, I’m here all week, try the waitresses and don’t forget to tip your veal.

Now. The first of these films is Everybody Loves Whales, a Drew Barrymore vehicle with Ken Kwapis (He’s Just Not That Into You) attached to direct. Essentially, it’s a Cold War era story about a guy/reporter and a gal/Greenpeace Activist who cause an international incident to help free three Willi… er… grey whales trapped under the ice in the Arctic Circle. Awww!

John Krasinski is set to co-star and Tim Blake Nelson just signed on.

Next up is Dolphin Tale, and in 3D no less. Inspired by a true story, this tale is about a dolphin who loses its tail in a fishing accident. Said dolphin makes friends with a young boy, who then gets everyone so excited about his new special needs buddy they go and make her a prosthetic replacement.

As uncharacteristic as this casting may seem, Harry Connick Jr. will play the vet who cares for the dolphin in his marine hospital, Ashley Judd will be the kid’s mum and Morgan Freeman will portray the doctor who creates the dolphin’s prosthetic limb. The director is Charles Martin Smith, also an actor – you probably remember him as the accountant in The Untouchables?

It’s a Six Degrees kinda thing, but Tim Blake Nelson and Ashley Judd are currently filming the crime caper comedy Flypaper due for release in 2011. These pictures have more in common than first meets the eye.

Don’t just take my word for it, though – you can check The Hollywood Report for both story one and story two.
