Did Will Eisner Commit Perjury Over Superman Trial?
Ken Quattro has unnearthed a remarkable document, the court transcript of the Will Eisner testimony in case between Detective Comics, owners of Superman and the Bob Iger/Will Eisner studio, who created the Wonder Man strip for Victor Fox of Braun Publications.
As Ken reports, Eisner has repeatedly stated that he told the truth in court. That Bob Iger had originally instructed Eisner to copy Superman to create Wonder Man, despite Iger's instructions that he do otherwise in court. As Eisner saw it, committing perjury. And that Eisner recreated this scene in the book The Dreamer;
But the court reports indicate that Will Eisner did no such thing. That he followed Bob Iger's instructions to lie on the stand. And that an extracted testimony reads as follows;
You can read the whole thing, including evidence cited at Ken's site, as a case is constructed that Eisner was taking inspiration from The Phantom rather than Superman, thereby depriving DC of a case.
DC won, by the way. But it wasn't thanks to Will Eisner, it seems.
