Kick-Ass #1 In Audience And Dollars – Just

Kick-Ass #1 In Audience And Dollars – JustThis should have been Kick-Ass' weekend. The superhero dark comedy based on the Marvel comic book had expected to clear over $30 million this weekend but didn't even make $20 million. There was also the embarrassment that it would come second in terms of dollars to the four-week-old How To Train Your Dragon.

However Kick-Ass total of $19.8 million finally pipped Dragon's $19.63 million. It's worth also remembering that Dragon being a 3D film charged a premium for tickets. so a lot more people saw Kick-Ass.

But damn.

The usual rule of thumb is that a film will make domestic gross of 2.5 times its opening weekend, and I understand that Lionsgate believe the film will have a greater longevity than average but this is still a major disappointment for the film, and increasing the beliefe that while superhero films do make big money, it's only the ones based on solid existing characters – even relatively minor ones like Iron Man.And they do need the established big name actors it seems.

Kick-Ass, just didn't have the provenance – and opened to less than half of what Wanted pulled in on its opening weekend. Still, with a much smaller non-studio budget, someone somewhere should still be making a lot of money.

Warner however will be hoping that Green Lantern is more of an Iron Man than a Hit-Girl…
