Indian Momics To Revolutionise Industry In February

Bal HanumanIndian mobile phone comics, or momics, have received some Bleeding Cool coverage, but 2010 promises a lot more.

Mogae Digital in a joint venture with Astro Malaysia is leading the charge, employing three hundred comic book professionals, writers, artists, colourists, digitisers, on a work-for-hire basis to create the comics, twenty titles announced so far – from daily comic strips to lengthier monthly titles, including Akbar-Birbal, Bike Rider, Vikram-Betaal, Tenalirama, Bal Hanuman and a historical character series spotlighting the likes of Hitler, Krishna and Alexander The Great. And all available on the mobile phone.

The strips are delivered to phone, not online, but via MMS services, with each strip consisting of no more than twelve panels, spread over two messages. Launch date is February 14th, tying up with a number of mobile phone providers across the billion-strong Indian audience. English translations for the smaller US/UK audience may follow later in the year.

Subscription to the service is expected to cost 30 Rupees (64 cents) for monthly titles or 1 Rupee (2 cents) for daily strips. But the main revenue expected will be from advertising. Other companies developing their own line include the Indian licensees of Cartoon Network with Dexter, Powerpuff Girls and Johnny Bravo strips lined up.
