Conservative Central Office Believe Russell T Davies Is One Of Their BackBench MPs
Yesterday British tabloid newspaper the Daily Mirror ran an interview with Russell T Davies, showrunner and re-creator of Doctor Who, as he steps down and hands the reins to Steven Moffat. During the interview he talked about what he expected to happen to the BBC if/when a Conservative government is elected in the UK next year.
It's going to be appalling. Jeremy Hunt [shadow culture secretary] has absolutely attacked the licence fee and then suddenly, a few weeks ago, he back-tracked and said, 'Oh no, we won't interfere with the charter'… They want the votes but once they get in they are going to be absolutely vicious. I think the BBC has got five or six years left… They'll dismantle it slowly. It'll get smaller and smaller until it just supports Radio 4 and some news."
And although he's living in the states, Davies said ""I'll come back and fight them at the barricades. I feel a bit like Alan Bennett, who said his favourite things about Britain were the BBC and the NHS."
So a Doctor Who blogger decided to contact Conservative Central Office asking for comment. They replied;
Mr Davies is a backbench MP and, as such, his opinion isn't necessarily party policy.
Really? Then David TC Davies MP got in touch with a comment.
To be honest, I wish Russell T Davies was correct and we were going to dismantle the BBC, because any organisation which pays out £6m to its presenters and then tries to hide it doesn't deserve a licence fee.
Got to love the Tories' press office…
