Avatar Plugs Of The Week: Gravel #14 and Anna Mercury 2 #2
Two for Warren Ellis from Avatar this week. Only one of them has a movie deal. But odds are the second is on the way.
For those not in the know, Gravel is a combat magician, basically Bravo Two Zero meets Hellblazer, Ross Kemp in a world of Neil Gaiman. He's a member of the magical SAS, currently entwined in dealing with the Major Seven who kind of rule Britain, ish. This is the concluding chapter of the arc, entitled To Live And Die In London and, well, let's say there's a lot more dying than living goes on. Written by Warren Ellis and Mike Wolfer, who draws it too.
Anna Mercury has a very different heart than Gravel's darkness. If Gravel is anti-authority, well darn it if Anna Mercury ist it favour of it. Possibly-ish. Some kinds of authority, anyway.
It's basically a positive Empire building story, one society taking responsibility for helping out another it has damaged, because it's the right thing to do. This attitude is well hidden by all of artist Facundo Percio's skin-tight suits, mad flowing hair, extreme fighting, kicking, explosions, and physical justification for a bunch of Matrix-type stunts, but it's there all the same. Anna is captured a kind of mix of fundamentalist religious/homeland security types, which aren't her preferred dining companions. But that's okay because suddenly, Space Vikings!
Both Gravel #14 and Anna Mercury 2 #2 are in comic shops from today.
