Thursday BackUps, SitDowns And FlashForwards For Comics

A couple of interesting Marvel solicitation amends. Amongst the many minor notes, we discover that Models Inc #3 will help to justify its $3.99 price with an extra six page Zombie Model back-up story by Paul Tobin and Colleen Cover.

And X-Babies #2 will, intriguingly, get an added reprint story in the back from Marvel's classic for-kids line, Star Comics, as well as a Star Comics commemorative variant cover by Jacob Chabot. The page count will be increaed accordingly.

Punisher Max #75 goes from 48 pages to 56 pages with 49 pages of editorial content. S.W.O.R.D. #1 drops from 48 pages to 40. Deadpool #900 jumps from 104 pages to 112 and Thor Defining Moments gets renamed to Thor Giant Size Finale. Well, it worked for Old Man Logan.

Oh and it seems that everything is getting a Marvel Super Hero Squad variant cover. Anyone want to do one of me?

Could this be a new future for Marvel digital comics? Earlier this week, Disney launched a move into digital book distribution, with an $80 subscription and access to Disney titles. This includes an option for the stories to be read aloud on the PC or Mac.

Doesn't this feel like a natural tie in for Marvel and their Digital Comics Unlimited subscription offering?

This is not an e-Book solution, or at least not yet. Expert Sarah Rotman Epps is quoted as saying "The company feels that devices don't offer a Disney-level experience for kids and families, and I agree with them"

Basically the company would an all singing colour/sound/movement device.

Of course the conspiracies start coming when you realise that Steve Jobs is on the board of Disney, that rumoured Apple Tablet/iBook/thingy device keeps coming up in conversation and the likes of Andy Ihnatko see an Apple Tabletish thing as a perfect digital comics medium. As Gizmodo says "Apple is in talks with several media companies rooted in print, negotiating content for a "new device." And they're not just going for e-books and mags. They're aiming to redefine print."

What are the odds, due to company lines of business, that Marvel are one? And Disney is the way to make that happen?

Expect all these companies to be at MIPCOM in Cannes next week. It's all about entertainment content, there'll be acres of comic-relevant content, and it's not for prying eyes. Do let me know if you're going. Apparently this fellow will be there…

What more encouragement do you need?
