Cammy's Covers - From Amazing Spider-Man to Mara
Cameron Hatheway writes for Bleeding Cool
Mara #1 by Ming Doyle
It?s the very simple color palette Doyle uses that grabs my attention, and keeps my eyes glued to this cover. Her raw style adds to the tone of this first issue, intriguing the reader to find out more about this mystery woman in uniform. The bit of smeared blood on her cheek indicates she?s a badass, and the flying cars behind her inform us she?s a badass in this advanced dystopian society. The icing on the cake is that volleyball-looking insignia under the title. I?m simply in love with Doyle?s style, and this cover definitely pleases my eyes.
Justice League #15 (Variant) by Billy Tucci & Hi-Fi
One of my all-time favorite pieces of Japanese art is The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Katsushika Hokusai. I think it?s the claws in the whitecaps that gets me. Tucci does a nice little homage to the classic work by adding the Justice League to do battle with the monstrous wave as it devastates a city. Initially I thought this was a variant by Cliff Chiang because of the softness of the lines and colors, but sure enough it?s the combined talents of Tucci and Hi-Fi that brings the epicness of this cover to life. The situation?* appears to be dire, for if Aquaman can?t even control the water, then what good does a Superman punch do, let alone Batman scowling at it? Beautiful cover, nonetheless.
Amazing Spider-Man #700 by Mr Garcin
This is my favorite cover of the week, hands down. While this cover was unveiled during Comic-Con this past summer, it?s still quite amazing to look at several months later. Mr Garcin is a genius when it comes to collages like this one, and it surely took him several months to put together. No two Spider-Men are alike, and it?s so much fun to see how many different artists have contributed to this series for the past 700 issues. This is the image to use for posters, iPhone covers, puzzles, t-shirts, and on the upcoming omnibus. There is so much to look at and enjoy, that this is what a milestone cover should look like.

- gnawing hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space
I'd love to see Billy Tucci pencil some Shi again."We see things only as we are constructed to see them, and can gain no idea of their absolute nature. With five feeble senses we pretend to comprehend the boundlessly complex cosmos."
or in other words:
"Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Cthulhu R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn. Iä! Iä! Cthulhu fhtagn!"
