Default The Queen's New Year's Honours For Film And TV Folk

I've had a look through the full New Year's Honours list, the Queen's annual awards ceremony. We already knew that Danny Boyle wasn't interested in participating, but who did say yes? Who will accept a trip to Buck house for some cucumber sandwiches and a quick eye-to-eye with Liz 2?

Here's everybody I find sufficiently film or TV related on the big list, and then their new honour.
    • Quentin Blake, illustrator of many of Roald Dahl's books - KBE
    • Kate Bush, singer-songwriter and director of The Line, The Cross and The Curve - CBE
    • Barry Cox, chairman of digital TV not-for-profit organisation Digital UK - CBE
    • Tracey Emin, artist, apparent camping enthusiast and director of Topspot - CBE
    • Ian Livingstone, co-creator of the Fighting Fantasy books and president of Eidos - CBE
    • Arlene Phillips, Strictly Come Dancing survivor and choreographer - CBE
    • Philip French, The Observer's film critic - OBE
    • John Lloyd, scriptwriter, Liff-definer, creator of QI and producer - OBE
    • Ewan McGregor, actor - OBE
    • Gerald Parkes, founder of Parkway Cinemas - OBE
    • Philip Shapiro, chair of Cornerhouse - OBE
    • Catherine Ugwu, producer of the 2012 Olympics opening and closing ceremonies - MBE
    • David Williams, managing director of Cornwall'sWTW Cinemas- MBE
There... I think I've understood which is an OBE, which an MBE and so on, while not really understanding why the distinction. Same mystery, year in and year out.

I wonder if Bettie B's going to give any of this lot the same amount of stick he/she's been giving Morrison over his MBE? Hmmmm.

Think there's some confusion here . . . have seen the BBC name John Lloyd, but attribute and have a quote from Jeremy Lloyd (Are you being served?) . . . and John Lloyd received an OBE in last years list as well . . . I think you can only get it once . . . sorry, it was a CBE he got last year . . .

You mean why there is a distinction, or why A gets honour X but B gets honour Y? There's a distinction because aristocracies require some to be better than others. Who gets which honour... probably based on a points system, with candidates getting ranked by their public profile, level of achievement, and how much the Prime Minister's spouse liked their last film/single/book/etc.

The 'BE' denotes inclusion in 'The Most Excllent Order of the British Empire' and entitlement to wear the British Empire medal.

The prefix denotes Knight Commander, Commander, Officer or Member within the Order.

Why is Tracy Emin accepting an honorific from the British royal family?

Could it be because she's an idiot? See also: everyone else on this list. It must be nice to be asked to Buck House, and kneel before a monarch who almost certainly has no idea who you are, or what you've done, unless you happen to be working on Antiques Roadshow. But wouldn't it be so much sweeter to just say no?

However symbolic it is, you do have to bow to the Queen (if she can be arsed to show up; otherwise, it's Prince Charles, or god help you, Andrew, or even Edward) before you get your tiring bauble. It's absolutely pathetic that people who are supposedly part of UK counterculture put up with this nonsense. Yes, you probably get to do a line of coke in the Buck House toilets, but is it worth it, when your credibility goes sailing out the window?

    Apparently, it is.

Very disappointing though, all the same.

Yeah, bad Googling. Confused by last year's honours being the 2012 ones.
