Post Weekly Reviews - 02 January 2013 (With Previews)

    Hi.

    This week's reviews thread.
The previews section is taken from Diamond's page, here:

    LOTS!

    ONWARD!

This is a thread to post some quick one paragraph
    reviews of the week's releases.

We have the reviews section to come back some time in the
future, this is more informal and just to get a paragraph of your
thoughts on the week's releases, and to discuss each other's opinions
thereafter, if one feels the need.

    Here's the format:
Title (publisher) # - Rating Out Of 5

    One paragraph review goes here.

Post as much or as little as you like, I'll
create a new thread each week.

    Ooh, Fatale Book 2

I was down for the Gunnerkrigg Court book too until I saw that it's a special leatherbound HC with a pricetag to match
When in doubt, "Try not to be a dick" is usually a good place to start.

^^^ I'm a sucker for Space Godzilla, who is one of the most visually-stunning kaiju ever created, although we're still waiting for her (she's part Biollante) to star in a decent story. I'm still on the fence over IDW and their over-priced line of books.

Put me down for New Avengers #1. I am expecting nothing less than the equivalent of Manhattan Projects meets the Marvel Universe. Hickman, let's do this!

Also: MORBIUS THE FUCKING LIVING VAMPIRE #1. Judging by his test-run in Amazing Spider-Man #699.1, Joe Keatinge has the skillz to make this series work and I'm pleased to see this one rolling out at just $2.99. I'm looking forward to reviewing every issue of this series here on Bleeding Cool. I used to own every published appearance of Michael Morbius (save for a few issues of Vampire Tales magazine) until I lost my old collection to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Seeing him back in print and in a (hopefully) decent series for the first time in 20 years should be a treat.

    MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE #1
    Marvel/ $2.99

After two long decades of waiting, Marvel finally gives Morbius another shot at an on-going series.

So, was it worth the wait?

    Meh.

Keatinge's Morbius is neither a brilliant scientist nor a mad/ vicious predator --- two important facets of the character's personality that have shown through historically in every Morbius comic previously published from 1972-2012. Instead, Keatinge's living vampire seems content to be left alone, shipping off to Brownsville (!!!) and living passively homeless, feeding on trashcan sandwiches instead of blood, with no apparent interest in finding a cure for his condition. In fact, Morbius goes the entire issue without drawing blood and is instead content to have the tar beaten out of him by gutter punks.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the gist of Morbius #1. There aren't any cringe-worthy moments, but the pacing is dull and nothing incredibly interesting happens. Rich Elson's artwork is simplistic and unremarkable. If this comic had cost more than $2.99, I would have felt severely ripped-off.

I might be the world's biggest Morbius fan, but even I can't justify rating this comic more than 2.5 out of 5 stars.

    20 Years Ago in...

MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE #1 (1992)
    Marvel/ $2.75

"Rise of the Midnight Sons" Part 3

On the lam again since his last run-in with Spider-Man (in Todd McFarlane's Spider-Man #14, fall 1991), Morbius finds himself pursued by his former lover, Martine Bancroft, Ghost Rider Danny Ketch & Johnny Blaze (picking up plot threads from Spirits of Vengeance #1), and the demon mother Lilith, who seeks to manipulate the living vampire for her wicked purposes. Quarried by Ghost Rider and Blaze, Martine convinces the duo to turn Morbius into the custody of an unscrupulous scientist in hopes of curing his vampiric condition once and for all. Things go awry when Morbius is unknowingly given an injection spiked with demon blood, setting off a tragic series of events that lead to one of the most harrowing death scenes in Marvel history and a new (immediately brilliant) direction for Dr. Morbius.

Scripted by Len Kaminski (Iron Man, Scare Tactics, Ghost Rider 2099) and drawn by Ron Wagner (Ghost Rider, Daredevil, DC's Genesis), Morbius #1 was a landmark release in the glutted summer of 1992, which saw Marvel and DC rush to flood the comic book marketplace with tons of bad titles in hopes of eclipsing blockbuster efforts from upstarts Image and Valiant. Following Howard Mackie's Ghost Rider, Morbius immediately became one of the most violent Marvel comics ever published, but without ever seeming gratuitous. Set in the gritty days of the grunge era, this comic had a bad attitude and wasn't afraid to explore the darkest corners of New York City from the get-go. Kaminski's script is simultaneously vicious and introspective, while Wagner's artwork positioned him as one of the best working pencilers at Marvel immediately following the exodus of Image artists. And even though this #1 issue is part 3 of a larger Ghost Rider crossover event, it reads fluidly and with little context needed, even 20 years later. It's really that good.

Two decades later, copies of 1992's Morbius #1 can still be found at cover price or just above it. The comic came bagged with an unremarkable Ron Garney poster. The back issue bin (or eBay) is your best bet for finding this one, as it has only been reprinted once, in the long-out-of-print Rise of the Midnight Sons TPB.

    Verdict:

5 out of 5 stars and one of the single-greatest Marvel comics of the 1990s.

    No lie.

    MORBIUS THE LIVING VAMPIRE #1
    Marvel/ $2.99

Somehow over the years ive missed reading much with Morbius in. I think i read a little in the 90`s and ive read some recent spiderman with him in. So i thought id give this a fair go and see what the charecter is all about.
As MechanicalClavicles said above, theres nothing reall wrong with this comic, nothing terrible, its just.....blah. For a first issue of a series it has very little "wow, whats going to happen next" to it.
Theres nothing here that makes me want to come back for a second issue and i would imagine that if it keeps at this level of quality then its going to be a short series.
    2 out of 5 stars.

They're thinking too small. Morbius needs bigger challenges. He's gone up against Spider-Man, Venom, Ghost Rider, The Thing... solid heavyweights in the Marvel U. He could have disposed of the gutter punks in issue 1 with two swipes of his claw and been done with it.

I'm going to stick with it for at least a couple of issues, but man... this definitely doesn't feel like a comic produced by the so-called "House of Ideas."

I will be picking up that Morbius #1 from 92 to give it a go.

That, my friend, is true Morbius! Len Kaminiski had evident love for the character. He'd been trying to launch a Morbius series for several years before he finally got the opportunity in '92.

The series ran for 32 issues, but it's mainly the first 14 that matter (8 by Kaminski, 6 more with Greg Wright and Ron Wagner carrying on from Kaminski's plots before things fall apart).

    NEW AVENGERS Vol. 3 #1
    Marvel/ $3.99

Another January letdown from Marvel NOW! Although Hickman's writing is smart, this felt like a Black Panther zero issue rather than #1 of an Illuminati series. Epting's artwork, at least, is looking good, but Hickman continues his legacy of coming up short at Marvel. Manhattan Projects, this is not.... at least so far.

For $3.99, this series is going to have to pick up some steam quickly or end up dropped from my pull list in short order. I'll give it another issue or two, just out of curiosity.

    3 out of 5 stars
