Hey, didn't Van Halen have a third lead singer for one album? Rep for anybody who can name him first.

JJ that third singer is Gary Cherone, his name is in the poll. Gary did an okay job and having seen him perform (during a John Lennon tribute in fall 2001) I can say he puts a great rock n' roll show. But if we're talking Van Halen, its Diamond Dave all the way, baby!

...Having had the misfortune of seeing Van Halen when they were a really lame small drunk bar band in the mid-70's, I can gladly and with honor say that the only incarnation of the band that was classic *and* worth listening to was the Van Hagar era. Sammy took the frontman ego out of the band by replacing David Lee Roth - who should have moved on to become a game show host, which he was only barely more qualified to be than a singer - and gave the band something it lacked; class and style. It's a shame that the other half of the ego - Eddie and Alex - couldn't tolerate success and ran Sammy off. Just goes to show that some people can't stand prosperity.

Just goes to show you how much I care about the first two singers. My mind had literally blanked out Gary Cherone. I guess in the brain of JJ Smooth he never even counted. Take your rep for making me look like a moron.

Sammy took the band to greater heights in his tenure. It was a band then, not David Lee Roth and his backing band Van Halen. What have they done in the last 10 years. Nothing of merit. One tour touting the return of the original, without Michael Anthony. Listen to the Chickenfoot CD, and you will hear where the creative part of Van Halen went.
