Good bands to start with are Parliament, Funkadelic, Eddie Hazel's single solo album, the Ohio Players, Bootsy Collins and James Brown. I'm sure other people can go into much greater detail.

Is it wrong that I can't decide which bothers me most?"

Stick to the music produced pre-80's:

Earth Wind & Fire, Funkadelic, Parliament , George Clinton, Tower of Power, War, Prince, Isley Brothers.

If you enjoy that, try (Pre-80s):

Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions, Bobby Womack, Marvin Gaye, O Jays, Smooth Grooves Jazzy Soul - Various Artists (2CD)
Solomon Burke, Stevie Wonder, Al Green

One of my new favorite bands is Here Come the Mummies, which I would say definitely counts as a "funk band".

They were on Bob and Tom recently (if you're familiar with that radio program), and here's some video from that:

I dare you to watch that and not be happy about it after!

I like music and I think Parliament is a good funk band.
I love MSN for the best news.
