Default Powers TV Lives On With Charlie Huston Writing A New Pilot (And Word Of Del Toro's The Strain, Too)

After FX shot their first TV pilot for Powers, based on the comics by Brian Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, they commissioned scripts for further episodes in the series. None of these were produced, as we know, but Bendis and FX president John Ladgraf were impressed with one in particular.

    Here's Landgraf explaining to IGN:
One of the scripts was written by this guy named Charlie Huston, and he was a novelist. Both I and Brian and others thought, ?Wow, there is actually something in the tone of this.? So Charlie was approached, I think by Brian, and said, ?Look, would you be interested in taking on Powers??

...we reconstituted the whole thing around Charlie as the creator, with Brian. Charlie went up to Seattle, and they sat down and they talked, and read through all the books, and they came back with a new vision, basically.
And now that script is under advisement. If FX decide to shoot another pilot it will be based on Huston's work, and there will be a new crew, a new cast, everything will start all over again.

Huston is likely best known in this parish for his work on Moon Knight.

I think Landgraf is showing an amazing, and commendable, amount of faith in Powers working as a TV show.

Incidentally, he also spoke in the same interview about The Strain, Guillermo Del Toro's vampire project:

I?ve sat and talked to [Del Toro] and Chuck Hogan, his collaborator on the books, and Carlton Cuse, who?s going to be his collaborator and showrunner, about everything that?s great about those books...

...I would say there?s an extremely high probability that?s going to be a series, not a pilot, but ultimately a season. And I think based on the books it?s going to be either three, four or five years, because I think we?re going to tell the basic epic story of the books. I think there are some places we?re going to expand or elaborate, but ultimately I think the beginning of the story is the beginning of the series and the end of the books is the end of the series. A lot of the stuff that happens in the middle will be the same, but a lot will be different.

Production is expected to start later in the end of the year, when Del Toro is done with Pacific Rim, before he gets too deep into Crimson Peak.

FX have a promising slate here. Let's see what happens next.

I'm torn here. I never liked Powers. I love Huston's novels. I don't care for his comics.

I guess I have to give it a shot.

I really hope they give this another shot. Huston is a reason for optimism.

The only thing of Huston's that I've read was Wolverine: The Best There Is. The book was essentially torture porn starring the Canucklehead BUT I found his characterization (of everyone but Wolverine) and dialog to be very strong. I'm in for this!

Can't help but think the window of opportunity for this thing has already slammed shut, what with Marvel's SHIELD - a show about human law enforcement dealing with superpowers - already having its pilot filmed, a pilot pretty much 100% certain to be accepted.
