    Default Star Wars Comics Come Back To Marvel

    When Disney bought Star Wars (and, you know, LucasFilm with it) the comics community wondered how long it would take for the Star Wars comics license to disappear from Dark Horse, who have held it for over two decades, to Disney's comics publisher Marvel.

    Turns out it was a year and a bit.

    Rather reliable Disney blog has the word. Blue Sky Disney reports;
    The Suits in the know have determined that no new contracts will be given to Dark Horse after the current ones expire. So all new projects after 2013 will be handled internally by Marvel.

    It's not known yet if titles will be worked into the regular line up, or will Marvel create a special branch of the company that deals with Star Wars. It'll take a couple of years for the old deals to work there course, but the stories that Dark Horse have coming down the pipeline will be the last. And you can expect anything new from Marvel dealing with Star Wars to arrive around 2015.
    Which is about the time we might get Episode Seven...

    I remember picking up Dark Empire in 1991. I rather enjoyed it and have dipped into the franchise on and off ever since, and it deservedly won far more critical acclaim that the previous license holder. Becaise, yes, Marvel had the license when the original films were released... and looks like they are getting it back again.

    So. Brian Bendis' Han Solo? Frank Cho's Princess Leia? David Mack's Boba Fett? Won't be long...

    What's next? Kenner to stop making Star Wars toys? Disney taking over?

    If they're smart they will attempt to bring in some of the current writers of the books.

    Boy, if you thought the Before Watchmen backlash was rough, wait until Marvel starts announcing Star Wars books...

    That will be a serious blow to Dark Horse, and a real shame considering Dark Horse basically kept the Star Wars flame going in the 90's.

    Between the Dark Horse Star Wars comics, and the LucasArts games of the 90's (like Dark Forces, X-Wing, Tie Fighter), the franchise stayed relevant while it wasn't being supported by movies or TV.

    Dark Empire was originally developed for Marvel (well Epic). I remeber it being in one of those MArvel Age Preview things they used to do.

    Kenner doesn't make Star Wars toys anymore. They have been bought by Hasbro, who produces Star Wars toys as well as Marvel, and a list of other licenses.

    Think before you make knee jerk comments.

    I think you've got that reversed. Dark Horse can tell some good stories, but if they didn't have Star Wars in their stable all those years, they probably wouldn't be around anymore.

    Well, damn.

    I'm a bigger Marvel fan than Star Wars fan, but I don't believe they'll be as good a home for the franchise as Dark Horse has been.
