    Default Whatever Happened To Angel Medina On Avengers?

    In the CBR Bryan Hitch interview we highlighted earlier today (headlining the buried story within) we also quoted the following from Bryan;
    Mark likes, where possible, to show rather than tell whereas on ?Ultron,? Bendy was choosing a more dialogue-structured narrative, at least on the issues I drew. That can be a little trickier for an artist. If you have twelve speaking characters in the same location for 30 or 40 pages, then obviously no writer is going to consider the physical location of each one in how he or she writes the dialogue.
    Which brought out this nugget. A reader writes;
    I was talking with a friend at work about Greg Capullo and how great it is that he resurrected his career with Batman.?* Then we got on the topic of the other McFarlane "clone," Angel Medina, and how he just up and disappeared from Marvel.?* (Strange timing, because I see he's doing an upcoming KISS book from IDW.)?* My buddy actually met Angel at the Philly con a few years back and a discussion was had about how Quesada offered him an Avengers book.?* The book was Mighty Avengers -- this is true, you can actually find a number of sites reporting that at the time.?* It would have been the Venom Bomb/Symbiotes storyline that was instead drawn by Mark Bagley.

    So what happened??* Angel got bored.?* He wasn't crazy about the line-up, as far as he was concerned, they were not "THE" Avengers.?* But the real killer was Bendis.?* Despite the success of their previous collaboration on Sam and Tiwtch, Angel said it was just too boring to draw pages and pages of the Avengers standing around talking.
    Certainly there is proof he had been given the job with a number of sites reporting it as fact. But as to the given reason he left it, is there any supporting evidence?

    Actually, yes. Some original art with the following accompanying text;
    I picked this up at WWC 2011. While flipping through Angel's portfolio, I came across this page and was a little curious about it since this arc was drawn by Mark Bagley. I asked him if this was a test page for the series. He explained to me that he was hired to do the arc, but halfway through issue 7 he got bored with it and left the book. This page is from Mighty Avengers issue #7.

    Only an artist would consider "boredom" a reasonable excuse to quit a fine gig. Must be nice to have the luxury!

    Surprised but at the same time have some respect for Medina. Surprised since well it is The Avengers, yes one of the off shoot books but still its like being asked to play for the Patriots in football yanno? As for the respect part at least to him he holds his art to a standard of what I can only assume is "I have to like/enjoy/have passion for what I'm doing.", if not why bother? While to me drawing every once in awhile is a hobby to them its a job but I'm sure he still has the passion enough to enjoy it like a hobby. Maybe one day he'll be brought back his style would fit GotG.... oh wait...nvm.... :/

    It sounds odd that an artist would sign a contract for a fairly prestigious book like this and be able to just pull out midway through his first issue. I can certainly imagine Brian Bendis' scripts and panel descriptions might be a little boring but they're not that boring!

    The only thing more frightening than Bowel Movement Bendis being considered a 'top' writer at Marvel, is Bendis teaching people how to write at Portland State University

    He quitted a high-profile job most people in his business would kill for during the first issue because it was "boring"? How professional... If it was Bendis, Millar or Loeb the one that did this, the internet would be on fire, but since it was an artist working on a Bendis book, there will be a lot of people treating him like he's a role model and a saint.
    To be or not to be. That's not really a question.

    Leaving mid-issue is unprofessional no matter how someone's personal taste tries to spin things.

    I don't have a problem with him not liking the roster and thinking the issue was boring. But he shouldn't have accepted it in the first place. But the majority of the issue is just talk. Funny though the next two issues are pretty much huge fights, including #9 with three huge double page splashes of just fighting
