Post Mobile Phones/Cell Phones And Not Having One

Everytime I look at the cornucopia of (ways-to-steal-your-money) cell plans here (and in the UK) I marvel at how people manage to stay out of debt.

I have many reasons for not having a cell phone, which get boring ...

But I did want to find out if I have any brothers or sisters out there.

I'm a freelancer, so I need some way of being available when I'm not at the desk. I have a pre-paid phone, which I hardly ever use to call anyone. It exists only so business contacts can call me. Basically, I only pay the minimum of €10 per year to keep it active.

If it weren't for the work thing, I wouldn't have a cellphone either. It's only on when I'm not at the desk during business hours. Outside of that time, I do not want to be available all the time.

I keep my cell phome switched off or on silent for most of the time, check it periodically, once every couple of hours. I don't like the phone disturbing me when I'm working (or playing :p), but the phone's still a necessity, as long as I'm doing client work...

I have a mobile which is on all of the time - I run my own business and without it I'd be lost.

Saying "I have no mobile" seems to be the new "I have no TV" for the smug, people rush to recall their tales of how they only used one once in 1997 when they broke both their legs.

There ain't nothin' smug about it, sister.
    Universally derided, singularly happy.
There isn't a smug bone in my body, at least. Or maybe there is, I'm quite smug about not being smug.

Now, obviously, if there's some more (deep seated) reason that might have caused you to go down that interesting line of rhetoric ... I'm available to council.

I'm not being arbitrarily kooky, either.
I'm desparately trying not to use this as a pedestal to broadcast the many reasons that make up one the reasons.
Is there ANYone out there without one?

A couple of years ago, having a cellphone was a status symbol. Then everyone had one, and suddenly it was a status symbol to not have one.

I think now the status symbol is to have several.

never needed one. I got a regular phone at home and that does the job just fine for the last 30 years.

all my colleagues/employers sound alarmed when i tell them i got no mobile but the famous "time of need" never happened in any restaurant/hotel i've ever worked.

i once got ditched by a girl in a bar that she wanted my mobile and when i started giving her my land-line number she lost interest ... these younger generations are really weird ....

talking about mobiles and gadgets in general i think it's more of an addiction rather than a necessity for most people.

I'm slightly in love with kaiho ... is that in the 'be cool' manifesto?

I've got one so friends and family can keep tabs on me, and for emergency crud, like accidents or my car breaking down. I learned the hard way several years ago that after a car accident and when in shock I can't remember my phone number, 9-1-1 or any number of basic details I normally wouldn't hesitate on. I don't take my phone with me into the workplace and find myself annoyed by coworkers who spend time texting their loved ones instead of doing their jobs.

That gets on my tits a bit, too.
I have more of an issue with it from the standpoint that some of those that spend time texting and making personal calls have the gall to complain about me using the internet .... s'ridiculous is what it is!
