Are portals still cool?

I just registered a domain for one of my City of Heroes characters, and I want to put up a site that doesn't require a lot of work. I'm thinking of maybe a portal: a site that'll show tagged posts from my LiveJournal, pull down screenshots from Photobucket, etc. Are those still cool?

I'm pretty sure all true "cool" points evaporated when I started asking about the coolness of web presentation formats. That's like asking which the pocket protector goes better with, the Han Solo or Captain Kirk T-shirt.
