But you can change your profile URL to mirror your account ... ie. profiles.google.com/madmanmoon or whatever it is ... seems silly to monkey with a good thing

Oh yes. I have http://plus.google.com/mighty.emperor/posts but I also like the simpler one. Plus it might suit people's purposes as it disguises your gmail account (I'm not bothered as I use it as my public one anyway).
They do say they'll introduce vanity URLs at some point, so worth keeping an eye open for that.

I'm in, but I'll be unlikely to be adding people from here (least not for a while) because I probably won't be using it until I'm back amongst a large group of friends again, and even then, I think I'll only use it for communication (like I do twitter)
