Default "Best" cheap laptop - UK?

Quick open call for nominations for a low cost laptop - not netbook/tablet/phone on steroids - currently available in UK?

Cheers (Guess whose daughter's Dell just went to Hell...)

Surprisingly, I would say that the Dell netbooks are a good look for dirt cheap and barely functional, but you're not after that. The only reason I say, is that they can be dual booted to a macOS, if one so desires.

Stick with the big guys like Dell and HP, because of t... oh wait, you're tech support.
Wait ... why don't you know?!

Anyway, Tosh make resilient stuff, but I'd still say the big wigs are the best bet. Make sure that you at least get a Core i3 and 4Gb of Ram ... that's the most essential things in the price.

Heh.. if it takes three phase, watercooling and a reinforced floor, I'm the go to guy... Plus I've built a few desk top units over the years.

But for the very latest rinky-dinky laptops, I don't mind canvassing ideas from better qualified people.

    Cheers

I'm fairly happy with my dell XPS, but she wasn't cheap, nor is she super portable.
I've been looking around at different things and it looks like the macbook air is a decently priced itty thing with decent power; the dell minis and the hp minis look interesting but are low on RAM.
I don't know of many decent ultraportables that haven't seemed that crappy. I did get to play with a friend's 10" dell a few months ago and it felt ungodly slow.

    For Saudi Princes!

Minimum of a grand (over here) and you're running Core2Duo if you do, as well.
In fairness, all talk is that they're sprightly little fuckers, but that money ... wow.

Peter, it might be an idea to take a look through some of the more populist gadget sites like CNET, ZDNET and PCWorld (all .coms). They do major brand comparison reviews like the laptop mags, and are usually reasonably OK in their standards. The more techie places (which I'm sure you're aware of) like tomshardware and gizmodo don't usually run such things, but they're also a little bit more ... I dunno ... not appropriate for what you're looking for ... advice wise.

Getting Loinfruit fixed up with a Saudi Prince is possibly a good long term Plan B...

Yeah, I'll scour the usual suspect sites, and probably hold off until Boxing Day/January sales anyway.. assuming the piteous whimpering for technological diversions doesn't get to me first...

It's been a pigging expensive month/year/decade so far.. grumble, grumble...

    Cheers

Macbook view it as a 3 year investment.

Aside from that we've shifted to HP only on our company laptops, the latest ones are surprisingly solid. If I was switching back then I'd get this http://www.saveonlaptops.co.uk/HP_En...0E_669349.html

I'd avoid spending less than £500 if you want it to hold up more than 18 months!

Nick (and therefore, Pete) ... you can spend about that much ... and get a Core i3 (sometimes i5) with a whole bunch of memory ... the rest Pete can handle ... (I reckon)

Lemme ask my ex who recently did such ... for less than <GBP500 and see what she says ...
