Default Pixel Qi - What ALL Laptops Should Use

    http://gizmodo.com/5577158/netbook-l...qi-display-kit

So they've released the tech to upgrade your netbook (only 1xSamsung & 1xA.N.Other ... officially) which is totally awesome.
My old sammy is currently up the spout, so once I've pounded the hard drive with a large hammer to fix it, I might start investigating fucking around with this.

All the same, Pixel Qi needed a thread.
If they can bring this tech in to colour it will be absolutely groundbreaking, but I'd say that's about 2 years away now (conservative estimate).

It is, yes, but not when it's in PIXELQIMODE (They should not call it that).
Once you engage PIXELQIMODE (by taking the brightness all the way down) it goes black & white, like a Kindle screen.

    Which reminds me:

My only problem with the pixelqi is that for doing artwork, it's not really that great. The color depth isn't quite there. But perhaps for a slate/tablet, minilaptop or whatnot it'd be a good idea for surfing the interenet and whatnot.

    Well, precisely.

The Pixel Qi screen wasn't released as purely an intent for tablets, it was released (and the company motto, if you will) in order to reduce the power consumption of the screen, and still keep it viewable in direct sunlight.
I don't know much about design, but I would've thought that design bods will have been rueing the "death" of the CRT. What with the whole colour pallette thing.

If it's aimed at anything it's aimed at e-reading. Take in to account that the technology can be applied to any LCD. They're speaking to many major LCD manufacturers (I think) about this, and incorporating their tech into the manufacturing process.
They're also developing low cost, low power HDTVs ... enabling "HD for everyone" or something like that...

The NotionInk Adam inches closer, with an Android OS powering it along on Tegra2.
It's basically what I want, and if the app store for Android has enough free choices (as there is no way I'm paying for a comic book reader app, that reads CBR/CBZ files) then that's fine ... but I don't like closed environments, it's nice to have access to do what one likes with the OS, so I hope that it's a full Android OS, not an Adam specific one.

    AnyHOW:

There are talks about the next gen Adam and Eves' that are coming ... all of which is scintilating stuff.

No chance at all? Zero? What about an ad-supported reader?

(I'll save my rant about the closed-openness of Android for another day )

Anyone know if there are good drawing programs for Android out there?

    Rant! Please!

And, yeah, maybe an ad supported reader would be fine, like, you know, inserting full page ads in to the comic.
They could even make a way to pay that forward tot he publisher, maybe.
Or even keep it vaguely unseen (by that I mean, not a published feature) ... you know ... you'd be reading your captain america and thinking ... "hmmm more ads than usual" ...

I dunno, however I'm sure it wouldn't be long in coming. Perhaps something on the GNU(?) platform, a port of gimp, maybe?
This (primarily) is why I'd like a Win7 (or 8!) tablet, as the ability to get decent appLICATIONS(!) is a lot higher.

The crux of the argument is Android is supposedly open to the core, but really it's open as far as Google wants to give you access and no more. Granted that level of access is deeper than Apple gives to the users/developers, but hell, least Apple is honest about the lack of control. Add on the fact that Google are letting manufacturers gimp their devices with non-removable homescreen tweaks like MOTOBLUR that chew through memory with no way of disabling without rooting the device (which is of course not cool anymore, because you know, would make the device TOO open then). Even Google has removed root capabilities and ROM flashing from their latest dev devices (old stock N1's), it just seems like their commitment to openness only goes so far.

Anyhoo! It's interesting people's feelings on paying for mobile applications (and well, apps in general), as I'm planning on shifting back into mobile app dev over the next few months it's interesting seeing how people feel about certain things (that I may, or may not be considering anyway )
