Default M.U.G.E.N (or Mugen) - Discuss

    Hi

I'm interested in this, I'm interested in which character packs are the best, who's got what, where I should go.
A cursory innernets search got me the base program, but I'm not sure if even that is the best thing to use.

So, your advice please, and/or your opinions on M.U.G.E.N ...

I used to be a player in the community way back, between the time when Mugen Forever stopped updating. Maybe one of the worst community's to have so many extremely talented people get entangled in, and the e-drama continues to this day.

It was basically emulation of emulation.
Characters with graphics ripped directly from games and reprogrammed from the ground-up.

There's no way for programmers to hide the coding used in their characters, so a lot of amuteurs jack codes from the better creators to make their own works better, which gets the original creators upset. And then characters and stages are always getting re-hosted en mass in incomplete forms without the "original" creator's consent. And I don't know if it's still going on, but a lot of guys are still 'sperging when a new-comer has the audacity to release a character missing a few frames who doesn't play exactly like the original.
Even though they aren't original works, MUGEN characters are very very hard to make - especially if you want to make them good. But on the other hand, they're very easy to create if you just want to rip off some other creator's work.

I actually had a game with all the Capcom Marvel characters from the various games put together. None of the Capcom ones, just the Marvel characters. But their is only so much fun in 2D fighting games you can have before it gets boring.

FPS games are more fun if you can connect online with other players. They got a few like the DC one out soon.

Oh look (sorry, not a message of help) ... this happy that this thread still exists!

Deg, really sorry I didn't respond!
I would agree, but I think that the old 2d fighters have this expertise thing that (thus far) I've only seen the Virtua Fighter (post 2) REALLY get good (don't come at me with Tekken BS, I've seen expert flail under button bashers in arcades). Something of a bugbear with me, because I really do prefer a game without an equaliser, which is something (perversely) that I don't like about MOST MMORPGs and wargames (etc). Sega Rally/Daytona/etc being a good example of bad equalising. These games give boosts to the (worse) drivers based upon making the multiplayer game competitive.

I'd say that games like SF:3 3rd Strike, and VF:2onward are great examples of cultivating competitiveness. You get better because you WANT to ... and these are games that are not found wanting for money in arcades.

Anyway, semi-rant aside, I'd like to sort myself out with a decent M.U.G.E.N. setup, but it's not a user friendly process ... that's for sure ...

That's cool and speaking of online games, I think most FPS such as Halo are just following the basic concepts of that genre made years ago. I'm actually not a big Halo fan or think it's that original a creation. I'm surprised how well that series took off.

I'd actually like to see some online games with a storyline and an end point of the game. But I don't think that could work well online. First with players able to join or to leave anytime, it would be tough for anyone to get the whole or know what is happening. Plus if the game has an end point, players won't keep returning to play again.

But I think as it stands now their can be more diverse types of games with online capabilities.

As for gaming in the arcades, that has unfortunately become an extinct form. And was the place where players actually met in person and not over a cable modem.

As for Mugen, it is tough to make a setup you like. Haven't played mine in a long time and am currently using other emulator games to play the gaming classics.
