Default Grinch Remake Gets Gorillaz Director Pete Candeland

As well as developing a feature film version of Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disney, Pete Candeland has joined Illumination entertainment to work up a new feature version of Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

According to Variety, Universal and Illumination saw a good fit between Candeland's visual style and design sense for a Grinch film. I can see where they're coming from - and to demonstrate, here's some of his work to demonstrate.

Somewhere in there is a great look for The Grinch. Will it replace Chuck Jones' short in my affections? Almost certainly not, but why should it?

Good I can't stand the jim carrey version, and it would work better as an animated movie anyways in my opinion

Now if they can just get Damon to score it...

Maybe get Jamie to do some design work?

...My only problem with the Carrey version was that Ted's widow stuck her nose into the script a bit too much, and trimmed/purged/censored some throwaway lines and background scenes that would have allowed the Grinch to skewer some of the other Seuss classics. Possibly the most reported one was the fact that the Grinch has a stuffed and mounted Cat in the Hat on his mantle, while another one was a garbage dive scene where the Grinch goes ballistic over the sheer amount of Green Eggs and Ham that wind up getting sent up the garbage chutes to land on Mount Crumpet - the gag being something along the lines of "what the hell makes you think *I* want this crap? [grumble] I hate Green Eggs and Ham, Max. It's probably the only thing those blasted Whos and I agree on!"

I don't know, I like the Jim Carrey version. I thought it was well-designed, at the very least.

Can you even imagine how different this will be than the horrendous last version?

And Who knew (pun intended) that Cindy Lou Who would turn out like this?

They should give Candeland an original project to work on, or let him come up with something cool on his own. I think The Grinch story has been pretty well told (in the Chuck Jones version) and provided a bloated, candy-colored, hour-and-a-half's worth of babysitting material (in the case of the Jim Carrey version).

But I guess they're in the position of wanting to work with an artist with unique sensibilities, on a project they feel confident will sell a set number of tickets. But it seems like they could get most anybody on such a project and it would sell that same number of tickets.... I guess that's why I'm not a Hollywood executive.

...Bah. I'm still waiting for Horton Hears a Doctor Who myself.
