When I first heard that Tonto was going to be the main character, I was hoping they were going to update HI-YO SILVER (1940), the first Lone Ranger flick in which nobody actually knows which of 5 possible people in town is the Lone Ranger...until only one man remains. It's quite brilliant. If you can find it online, I recommend it.

I'm just not buying Depp as Tonto...or as someone of Native American descent at all. Maybe his Tonto will have a back story similar to Mary McDonnell's DANCES WITH WOLVES character?

I'm getting a steampunk-less WILD, WILD WEST vibe more than anything else tho'. The score's not helping. How about just an allusion to the William Tell Overture, hm? That might help.
