Weta Videos: How To Make A Goblin King, Orcish Defiler Or Wide-Eyed Gollum
When we ran ILM's behind the scenes promo for The Avengers, I wishedfor something comparable from Weta Digital. What we have here, Ibelieve, is something better.
These clips, found at The LA Times, might not be dance floor fillersin the way ILM's was, but there's good info in the audio here as wellas the video. Particularly the bits about herpes and Gollum's pupildilation and "uncomfortable spasms."
Weta also contributed to The Avengers and Prometheus, meaning theyhave three films up for the Oscar. Even when you consider votesplitting, I think they're pretty much assured a win - and, for mymoney, it's The Hobbit that deserves it.
No doubt there's some exceptional work there, but my first reaction after seeing it in 3D/HFR was some of the CGI was very patchy (wargs)
...watching back some of that on youtube makes me wonder whether HFR in fact was a problem..
After the dwarf prologue and initial hobbiton scenes the 'sped up oddness' seemed to disappear - but I'm suddenly more aware again of
the artificial 'tv studio' effect that it created (ie not evident in those clips)
Overall i would still rather Prometheus win for the most seamless integration of practical and CGI effects..the star map alone was more stunning than the whole goblin mountain.
Either way, it's a very strong field this year and it's very cool that the standard is so high. Now if somebody would just use this technology to blow AND fuck with our minds.
