Combustible is only a short, but it's the first film from Akira's Katsuhiro Otomo in some time and therefore worth our interest. It's based upon a manga he published in '94, telling the story of Edo-era firefighters.

This trailer has been around since before Christmas by ANN only pointed me towards it yesterday. There's apparently a very good chance the film will feature in tomorrow's Oscar nominations.

Sweet gods Otomo made an amine short in the classic Ukiyo-E painting style? OH MY GODS...how did I not know about this. It looks GORGEOUS! And since Ukiyo-E is the style that eventually gave way to anime, it's so fitting.

Looks amazing, just like a woodcut or painting from that period.

I like if directors take their times between films, but geez, Otomo Katsuhiro could really have done a few more by now.
