For Two Days Only - Lawrence Of Arabia On What Might Maybe Possibly Is London's Best Cinema Screen
If you agree thatLawrence of Arabia is the ideal manifestation of the classical Hollywood epic, as many will tell you that it is,* then I imagine you would want to see it on a nice, big screen with sound to match.
The 4k restoration of the film is currently on release in the UK and, arguably, many of the nation's cinema screens aren't really up to the job. The film has been playing at the Empire in Leicester square but, what with the market for rep films being what it is, not on their main screen.
Now, I can pick holes in this auditorium. They use the inferior Dolby system for 3D for one thing - not that this will be a problem withLawrence. The sound, I should probably tell you, has been THX certified.
I think it's nice to make a bit of fuss about this. People spend more and more time watching films at home these days - me too - but I'm tempted to make a pilgrimage to Lawrence next Tuesday. Put some more "special event" back into proceedings.
*I'd go for Spartacus or Gone With the Wind, maybe even The Two Towers if you'd let me, but Lawrence certainly ranks.
