Default 91 Cinemas Where You'll Be Able To See The Hobbit At 48fps

Ahead of US pre-sales starting on Wednesday, the first cinema chain to announce their screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in its native 48fps format are Regal. There's a fair number of locations - not as many as I'd hoped, more than I'd feared. Let's just call it "a start" and see what the other chains can offer.

So, below is Regal's list of 91 locations where the film is going to be showing in HFR 3D - the branded name for higher frame rates in stereo. Below that is their FAQ sheet on the new format, as posted to their website.

I'm still awaiting confirmation of where the film will be playing at 48fps in the UK. On the upside, those in the UK looking to make a common-or-garden booking can do so at several venues.

I've heard a rumor according to which there are countries out there besides the US and the UK.

Is anywhere showing it as one fully rounded film instead of three self indulgent ones?

Sorry Brendon, can you give some more context? What's the advantage of 48fps? As opposed to what?

    It's more!!!!!!!!!!
I think some people think it gives you a smoother, more real looking image (less flickering and blurring), while others feel it makes everything look a bit cheap.

Thanks. I don't fancy The Hobbit (managed just one and a half of LOTR before walking out of the second one, bored, and the singing in The Hobbit trailer frightens me) but I like to learn stuff! And I hope that everyone anticipating it loves The Hobbit when it shows up.

Me, I'm looking forward to Nativity 2 (which, unlike the first, doesn't have Martin Freeman, wonder why )

I did fancy it, cautiously at two films, but not as three. The singing doesn't encourage me though, I read Fellowship before the film came out and god the songs were annoying.

While I expect reviews of the 48 fps will be mixed, it is how audiences react to it that will determine its future. I had to laugh when I read their promo of how Peter Jackson is pushing the boundaries of filmmaking with this when in fact Douglas Trumbull pushed this format in 1985 and the studios rejected it after seeing his sample film. He wound up having to take it to theme parks where it was used on the Back To The Future ride for when it was flying back to the past, down a dinosaur's throat, etc. A feature film which looks like video is not a breakthrough in technology, it is a huge step backwards. If you've ever seen those few 1960s Twilight Zone episodes shot on video then you know how odd it looked.
