With pre-sales about to get rolling at the EFM in Berlin, Zentropa have issued an official blurb for Lars Von Trier's quasi-pornographic Nymphomaniac. It's written as, more or less, a front line commercial for an unmade film, devised to draw in potential distributors. Here it is in full:Nymphomaniac is the light and poetic story of a woman's erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-?diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe.
On a cold winter's evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi?unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway. After bringing her to his flat he sees to her wounds while trying to understand how things could have gone so wrong for her. He listens intently as she over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi-faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.
The shoot is due to start this summer, with Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard expected to take starring roles. What remains to be seen is how true Von Trier will be to his promise that the film will be pornographic, though I expect that might depend on what you take the word to mean.
I'm particularly curious to see what these "rich associations" and "interjecting incidents" might be. I guess the world will find, May 2013, at the Cannes film festiv... oh, never mind.
