Last I heard, Shawn Levy's next picture was going to be either Fantastic Voyage or Frankenstein, but it seems that's old news. As Frankenstein has apparently collapsed under the strain of its $80 million budget, Levy has been left to pick up another comedy picture.
And he's gone for Interns. I get it. I'd really go for some interns too. And, no, I don't mean that in a Bill Clinton sense.
Here's how Vulture set up the film's premise:Vaughn and Wilson will play forty-ish company guys who both get laid off in a downsizing. Convinced they?ve gone about managing their careers entirely wrong, they resolve to become interns at a Google-like dotcom and start anew. Suddenly, the two old chums are competing against wily, fresh-faced 22 year olds for advancement.
And hilarity ensues. Perhaps.
Apparently, Vince Vaughn became available to star when the film he was gearing up for, Insane Laws, "did a Frankenstein" and fell apart over financial concerns. Even the project itself, the actual film Interns, became available for Fox to produce after Universal recently shelved it.
Seems like Owen Wilson is the only one not crawling onto this project from some smoldering wreckage. And, yes, I know there's a really cruel joke to make, but I don't believe in it, so I won't.
I thought that Wedding Crashers got a long way on the interplay of Vaughn and Wilson - though, to be honest, it's Wilson's stuff alone that I really remember now. But that's not a wash out, by any means - there are similar comedies I've seen just this last month that have found it ten times harder to make even one tenth of the impression.
(And you know what, now I come to think about it, any misreading of the headline as "Shawn Levy has some interns, and Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn are reteaming for their... um... benefit" is probably more true than I first assumed)
