James Mangold's X-sequel The Wolverine is yet to start production, but it seems that Fox are confident they've lined their ducks up nicely this time as they've set an official release date.
Get your diary. The one you haven't bought yet. And use pencil just in case. Here it is: July 23rd, 2013.
So what does this set the film against?
At the moment, no other film has that exact release date. This may be because The Hollywood Reporter have mistakenly listed a Tuesday when they actually meant the Friday, the 26th. That does seem to be the case, as they specifically acknowledge the two films already set to open on that weekend - the Dirty Dancing remake and Disney's big screen spin on Phineas and Ferb.
Its being assumed that neither of those will put up much of a fight for the same audience, though I can see some crossover between Dirty Dancing and a Hugh Jackman movie.
The nearest "sci-fi or fantasy" film is Joseph Kosinski's The Movie Previously Known As Horizons, Or Even More Previously As Oblivion, with Tom Cruise. That one is set for the previous week, the 19th.
If this were politics, the slur campaigns would be vicious. Disney would start with "From the director of Knight and Day", Fox would counter with "From the director of Tron: Legacy", and back would come "The Sequel To Wolverine: X-Men Origins."
