One of my favourite actors has passed away at the age of 81. Ben Gazzara made waves in four of John Cassavetes films, and was still working into his early 80s.
The last time I saw him in a new film was 2006's Paris Je T'aime, an anthology film. Gazzara's story teamed him with fellow Cassavetes player, Gena Rowlands. It was bittersweet seeing them together again, and their advanced years underscored the drama very poignantly.
Before that, he had a role in Dogville, not too long before that he was in Happiness and The Big Lebowski, and winding backwards we'd eventually get to Tales of Ordinary Madness, in which he played Charles Bukowksi, and then the 1970s and a whole raft of exciting pictures: Saint Jack, Opening Night, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie.
It's likely that last role which I will always associate most closely with him.
Here's the trailer.
Ben Gazzara, 1930 - 2012. He will not be forgotten.
