Director John Crowley might be the best kept secret in British cinema right now - and what's more, actors should love him.
His last film, Is There Anybody There? was a brilliantly well-crafted drama giving Michael Caine one of the best roles of his whole career; his incredibly compelling TV movie Boy A gave Andrew Garfield his first part in something feature length.
He's had a few films in development for a while now - What Was Lost, A Steady Rain and a thriller called Closed. That last one has a screenplay by Steve Knight, scriptwriter on Dirty Pretty Things and Eastern Promises.
And it seems that this is the film Crowley will be rolling on next. Though Focus Features' press release isn't reporting a title - Closed seems pretty changeable, to be fair - it identifies a thriller that will pair Knight and Crowley.
The film will start shooting in the UK in April, with stars Rebecca Hall and Eric Bana. Here's the official plot blurb:Two ex-lovers, Martin and Claudia find their loyalties tested and their lives at risk when they are joined together on the defense team in a terrorism trial.
Focus' honcho James Schamus drops a nice hype quote too:Working Title and John Crowley have not only crafted a nail-biting thriller, but an emotional rollercoaster as well ? one that speaks to the heart of the human condition in our time.
Yeah, whatever that means. And why no mention for the writer?
Knight can certainly cook up some great suspense concepts and character drama, and Crowley has the chops to pull it all off. I'm sure that Closed, or whatever it ends up being called, will be one to keep an eye out for.
