Default Ridiculous, Hilarious Phantom Menace 3D Trailer Makes It Clear The Kid Stays In The Picture

Alasdair Stuart writes for Bleeding Cool.

You have to give Lucasfilm credit, there's no shying away from the controversial, fanbaiting elements of The Phantom Menace in this new trailer for the 3D version.

Anakin turns up 6 seconds in, Jar Jar's not far behind and even the voice over's kid-centric pitch seems a little knowing. The:
The Phantom Menace has every kind of droid! Lots of them! Good ones! Bad ones! Make that an entire army of bad ones!

moment in particular. Never mind the quality, feel the shiny, kids! Feel it! FEEL IT! That sort of thing.

To be fair there's a lot of shiny on display, the special effects still look good, Darth Maul's still an iconic image with nothing behind it and Liam Neeson and Ewan Mcgregor still look faintly worried throughout. Now you'll just be able to see their brows furrowing in full on 3D. In between all the podracing ("The fastest most intense sport we never talk about again EVER!"), droids ("LOOK AT THE DROIDS! LOOK AT THEEEEEEM!") and deeply bizarre pseudo-comedy dogfights.

The Phantom Menace opens in 3D worldwide on February 10th. You just read that. You can't unread it.

That is truly a hideous affront to mankind.

Someone needs to tell Lucasfilm that there is a difference between marketing towards kids... and marketing towards dumb kids with bad taste.
“All companies are pyramid schemes, pure and simple. The people at the bottom of the pyramid, the creators, labour on behalf of the people at the top, the publishers. Money, like hot air, rises…. With a little effort, any creator can learn to do what a publisher does. No publisher could ever learn in a million years to do what a creator does. That’s why contracts exist. Without contracts, publishers have nothing. Without contracts, creators have everything.” - Dave Sim, 1993

I was waiting for the "only in Cartoon Network" line at the end.

I'm hoping it does make money as I want to see all six in 3D (a rarity since 3D isn't really my thing). The only way I'll get my wish is if these movies are profitable. Plus, I would think all the original trilogy lovers out there would want this to work well so they can see them on the big screen again.

Why? Since we won't ever see the original trilogy on the screen again ... Hell, you can't even buy the original trilogy on disk.

Considering what Lucas has done to them I doubt, who wants to see those CGI singers from Return of the Jedi in 3D, who wants to see Jar Jar in 3D? (not including you) If Lucas promised to show the original versions of the films or at least versions before the 90s f-ups I guarantee everyone would watch it, and to be honest who has enough respect for Lucas (especially the fans) who want to watch these half arsed films?
