Default A Crazy Rumour About The Live Action Star Wars TV Series

According to a rather astonishing new rumour, a well-worn but pretty wild sci-fi staple could be on the cards for Star Wars-ification. Be warned that the following is a potential spoiler... for a potential show. We may not ever get to see Star Wars Underworld at all, let alone with this plot point in place, so you might consider it more safe than usual to read on. Okay. So, you know that idea in Doctor Who last year about going back in time and killing Hitler? And also in that one Twilight Zone with Katharine Heigl? And sort of in Red Dwarf, and loads more too? Well, you can't exactly do that in the Star Wars universe. They do have time travel, but they don't have Hitler. So, instead, one would have to go back in time to try to wipe out Darth Vader. As Aint It Cool put it:
one of the series' first episodes will involve a group of bandits acquiring the capability of time travel, and using it to travel back in time to stop Darth Vader from ever existing.
That's according to an "untested" source. Nice use of the word "bandits" - quite evocative of a character type. Interesting that these wouldn't be common or garden members of the rebel alliance. Now... why Vader, and not The Emperor? Maybe the clue is in the exact wording - "to stop Darth Vader from ever existing." Perhaps they're not out to slaughter the young Anakin (though I can think of plenty of people who would like that) but to keep him on the straight and narrow, away from the dark side?

    Oh, Lucas....
“All companies are pyramid schemes, pure and simple. The people at the bottom of the pyramid, the creators, labour on behalf of the people at the top, the publishers. Money, like hot air, rises…. With a little effort, any creator can learn to do what a publisher does. No publisher could ever learn in a million years to do what a creator does. That’s why contracts exist. Without contracts, publishers have nothing. Without contracts, creators have everything.” - Dave Sim, 1993

That cookie cutter plot has been done plenty of times in different things. i would rather it not be done in the Star Wars universe. Besides if they succeeded they would end up creating a new tangent universe like in Star Trek, Back to the Future 1 & 2 etc...

I'll believe it when I see it. Star Wars has some pretty hard rules of how things work. Time travel has never been part of that except in a few select expanded universe bits... and I'm pretty sure none of them involved travel back in time.

Is it wrong of me to find this idea exciting just because it means the TV show could take place in a different timeline and not mess up continuity for the various excellent Expanded Universe stories?

...anyway, yeah yeah requisite joke about how it would be great to go back in time and prevent the prequels from happening.

The easiest way to do this is not let Anakin's mother get killed as that's when he started turning to the dark side, but that second film had a couple odd things involving this. First Anakin hadn't seen his mother in ten years when one would have thought the Jedi would have bought her out of slavery and given her a safe home somewhere. Then after she's killed and Anakin slaughters an entire village (men, women, children), he later confesses this to Padme and she is unfazed that her boyfriend essentially just confessed to committing the My Lai massacre. So none of that made any sense in the second film anyway.

Keep in mind that you're talking about Ain't It Cool News, not a site with credibility or a history of being correct. If it's on AICN, it's either old news, fake news, paid-for reviews or reality TV no one cares about. AICN is basically the armpit of the Internet, one step down from TMZ. I take this rumor with a major grain of salt.

Well that would be an insanely boring story unless Lucas was actually going with the alternate timeline idea. Otherwise it would be a predictable case of being unable to do it, or if they are able to do it they would discover the universe is even worse off and would have to reverse it.
