Default The Naked Gun Videogame That Seems To Have Fallen Off The Face Of The Earth

A trailer for a Naked Gun tie-in videogame has started doing the rounds in the film blogosphere today. It looks to be a multi-part adventure game in something like a Lucas Arts or Telltale style. Here's the clip:

Bob LoCash, one of the game's co-writers, worked on the screenplay for Naked Gun 33 1/3rd. That's the developers' key link to the past here - though I suspect Leslie Nielsen would also have given it a shot had he still been with us.

And, you know, it's perhaps a little sweet that they've opted for a Frank Drebin Jr. character rather than go for a Nielson impersonator. Assuming they had the choice, legally speaking.

The game was announced last August, and was supposed to be launching in September. From the press release:
Spoofing modern crime dramas and lampooning popular video games, THE NAKED GUN: ICUP is designed as a continuation of the classic film franchise for the digital age. The game will be serialized over six episodes starting this fall with a new episode debuting monthly. Each episode will be fully voice-acted by top Hollywood talent to deliver a classic story-driven adventure supported by the itemized incentive structure of current popular social network games.

The release of the first episode of THE NAKED GUN: ICUP will coincide with Paramount Home Entertainment?s Blu-ray debut of THE NAKED GUN: FROM THE FILES OF POLICE SQUAD, available exclusively at Best Buy on September 25th.

    Well... that didn't happen.

The last update on the project's Facebook page is dated 19th September - less than a week before the supposed launch. Then comes radio silence.

When the trailer started going around today the clip being shared was an official one hosted on Vimeo. That has since been made password protected - hence me opting for the YouTube variant - so we do at least know somebody connected with the game is still alive.

So we can rule out one explanation for the vanishing act at least.

I'll let you know if this game somehow inches back onto the radar. I'm not really expecting it to do so any time soon.

Now please excuse me. I'm off to find my Police Squad DVDs...

They don't. And don't call them Surely.
