Someone on the radio last week was very upset that the BBC hasn't done more (said more, I don't know) since that came out. I can't imagine what they could do now, but I guess there are times when Something Must Be Done.

Someone on the radio last week was very upset that the BBC hasn't done more (said more, I don't know) since that came out. I can't imagine what they could do now, but I guess there are times when Something Must Be Done.

Well, indeed. How was anyone at the BBC realistically going to be able to curtail Saville's antics, any more than police, the government or, hilariously, the royal family did? Without direct evidence (and actually, there's still a lack of this - I've no doubt that Jimmy Saville was the monster everyone says he is, but how to prove it?) what could they do?

If the BBC had put the kibosh on everyone they suspected might have been acting improperly towards underage ladies in the sixties, would The Beatles still be considered a national treasure? Would Mick Jagger have got a knighthood?

In the latter case, in particular, it seems doubtful.

Still, there seems to be a suggestion that Saville's victims are after compensation from his estate. But he's already left it to charity. A final throw of the dice from the master sex offender? Quite possibly; there doesn't seem to be an easy way out of it, for anyone involved.

It's a godawful mess, and there are questions to be answered about who knew what, and who suspected what but didn't want to dig deep enough to find out things they should have... Plus even if Jim is roasting nicely where he should, there may well be others who do need to have their collar's felt by the coppers...

That said, there does seem to be an orgiastic enthusiasm for spit-roasting the Beeb while various other organisations get a much lower profile...

Still, at least it takes people's minds off of whatever the politicians are getting up to... dammit...

I'm looking forward, to the extent you can about this stuff, to the forensic evidence, in the Stoke Manderville graves. Possibly, it'll be damning. But if Jim is looking down from Heaven (where he may be now - he did a lot of work for charity, after all; God might have ... overlooked some of his leisure interests) the investigation may not go as far as it could.
