Though I wouldn't ever praise the originals too wildly I've often enjoyed latter day reinterpretations of Hanna Barbera toons, from certain special episodesJohnny Bravo to Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law and most definitely includingScooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated.

Here's another, recreating the Wacky Races in live action, and CG of course, for a Portugese Peugot commercial. You know, that's fun to say out loud: Portugese Peugot. Portugese Peugot. Portugese Peugot.

And that was supposed to make the Peugot look good? I'd much rather have a ride in Penelope Pitstop's pink and shiny Compact Pussycat.**

Thanks to FOG for the embed.

*Was that ambiguous enough for you? Jeez. I can promise you it was literally true, though, or I'd never have said it.

Comic book stores with Diamond Comic Distributor accounts are able to visit the San Diego Comic Con for free, two tickets per store. The individuals in question have to have official buying power in the store and it's seen as a measure that supports the comics industry, gives comic stores a better idea of what is out there and... let's them pick up exclusive items and sell them in the shop!

The same will happen again this year - but retailers only have until next Friday to register on the Diamond Retailer website. Consider this a friendly reminder to those who haven't filled in the form yet!

Now You Know: The Car On The Cover Of Action Comics #1 Is A 1937 DeSoto (But That's Just Part Of The Story)

Over at Jalopnik,Jason Torchinsky tackles a question I'm sure a few of us have wondered about over the years: What's that car Superman is hoisting on the cover of Action Comics #1?

Torchinsky makes a pretty good case that it's a 1937 DeSoto. And it does look like a very close match.

In fact, add in the whitewalls like the ones seen on this 1937 DeSoto on flickr, and it's a near-perfect match.

But there's a little bit more to this story, I think. We know from the lengthy legal battles between DC Comics and the heirs of Jerry Siegel, that DC has maintained that an unknown staff artist drew the cover of Action Comics #1 based on an interior panel from that first story. A relevant bit from DC's lawyers:
DC's artists also created the cover of Action Comics #1, which introduces the Superman story that immediately follows. A February 22, 1938 letter from DC editor Vin Sullivan to Siegel provided: "I'm enclosing a silverprint of the cover of Action Comics. You'll note that we already used one of those panel drawings of SUPERMAN, as you suggested in your recent letter." In other words, per Siegel's suggestion, DC used one of the panel drawings from the Superman story as a template to create the cover art.

Indeed, they go on to note that the car on the cover does appear to be different than the car in the interior story:
The car featured on the cover is fully visible and contains different rear wheel wells, headlights, and other details than the car in the panel. On the cover, the tire that flew off the car is angled differently than the panel, emphasizing the force with which Superman smashed the car into the rocks.

Here's a comparison of the two:

As an aside, I'd further note that the infamous Superman check with its $130 line item based on a documented page rate of $10 would tend to support the idea that Siegel & Shuster were paid for the 13-page interior Superman story, but they were not paid for the cover -- lending some credence to the idea that someone else did the final cover version.

So, it's very possible -- perhaps even likely -- that someone other than Joe Shuster drew the final version of the Action Comics #1 cover based on Shuster's interior panel. And perhaps that unknown artist used a different reference for the car on the cover.

But what was Shuster's original intent? I think a commenter to the Jalopnik article is even more correct than he knows. Looks like Shuster may have had the 1937 Plymouth Deluxe in mind. What do you think?

You can find Brian Augustyn and John Derrick West at Phoenix Comic Con next to the line for Brian's creative partner on Gotham By Gaslight, Mike Mignola.

But they have something new to show people. The first pages, in black-and-white and colour, from their new comic together Dead Ringer.

A supernatural detective comic, about one Kate Bailey returning from fighting in Afghanistan, only to be murdered. Something she is rather annoyed about, especially as she seems to consider herself alive. It's time to get some answers...

The Overwhelming Hospitality Of Phoenix Comicon

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/05/IMG_6424-600x450.jpg ...

Jason Carter from Babylon 5 here, posing with some prosciutto, next to the olive dip. Now, I have done a lot of comic cons but Jason has done even more. And he, like I, were in praise of the hospitality of the Phoenix Comic Con towards its guests, outstripping by far other shows.

When I arrived at the airport on Wednesday with writers Kieron Gillen and Si Spurrier, three greeters were waiting for us, and we were whisked away from the heat in air conditioned cabs to the hotel, taken through check in and given packages of drinks tickets, guides to the show and to the guest experience. The boys even got stipends to get them through any incidental costs during their signings. And waiting for us in our room, cupcakes and Frappuccinos.

There were also details of the green room in the Hyatt Regency which lays on sumptuous gourmet breakfasts and snacks, elaborate cakes and drinks through the day, as well as an area for young children and big kids to sit, relax, play and chat. The people there are kind, attentive and overgenerous and this morning when I arrived late for breakfast, did all they could to whisk me up eggs and a fresh smoothie.

I've been a guest at many shows, but nothing comes close to the pampering of Phoenix Comic Con. It isn't the most central location, it doesn't have the prestige of San Diego Comic Con, but it more than makes up for it as an experience. If you are asked to be a guest at this show, for whatever reason, I suggest you treat yourself and say yes.

And the happier the guests, the better performances they'll give to the crowds there to see them!

Contrast and compare the original, UK edit of the Walking With Dinosaurs trailer and this new, US version.

The voiceover has switched voices, and from third to first person. Well, "person."

The earlier trailer reminded me of Disney's Dinosaur, now the film seems something like the Disneynature films too. It's that chummy tone.

Assuming that the "inner monologue" is going to be part of the film and not just the ad campaign, I imagine the little fella might not have an American accent in the UK release. I'd be curious to see how his script might differ too, country to country.

The Jim Henson Gallery is to house a new, permanent exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art. I'll see you there.

The exhibition was announced yesterday at a press conference that was caught, handicam style, by YouTube user Apple Juice Dance. Here's the video picking up just before Piggy arrives, running through to Oscar's lovely Carol Spinney joke.

Incidentally, the Museum is located pretty much next door to the studios where Sesame Street is filmed. This NYC zipcode must pack the highest concentration of Muppet DNA in the world.

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2010/11/man-from-uncle-350x348.jpg ...

Once upon a time, the big budget do-over of 60's spy series The Man from UNCLE was going to be a Steven Soderbergh film with a script by Scott Z. Burns, his Side Effects, The Informant! and Contagion collaborator. It sounded like the kind of movie I'd crawl through broken glass to see.

Then would-be lead George Clooney put his back out in a bad way and the film fell apart.

Surprisingly, Warner Bros. resurrected it with Guy Ritchie in the hot seat, and Tom Cruise joined up.

Tonight, though, Deadline are reporting that Cruise is out.

This, to me, is the most remarkable part: the studio are pressing ahead and simply looking to replace him. I swear, this film seems to have more lives than We're The Millers.

Ritchie is apparently saying on with already cast co-stars Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander, and while the script has been rewritten by Max Borenstein, some elements of Burns' work remain.

Cruise's motivation, apparently, is to get Mission: Impossible 5 into tip-top shape. No Heroics and Iron Man 3's Drew Pearce has recently committed to write that one, with Way of the Gun and Jack Reacher's Christopher McQuarrie in line to direct.

Who could Warner Bros. possibly secure that has the star power to justify - in their mind at least - the budget for this film? The only candidate that seems suitable to me, off the top of my head, is Robert Downey Jr. But will they want to pay that much? And will he really want to leap into another action movie franchise?

Coming from Monty Nero and Mike Dowling in October from Titan Comics, is the collection and continuation of the Death Sentence story that's been running in CLiNT Magazine the past year. A superhero comic with a touch of the Strikeforce Morituri, those who contract the superhero virus have only six months before they die... the book folows the lives of three such carriers, choosing what to do with their remaining months.
Here's a peek for those unfamiliar...

A new, three part story set in the Dredd 3D movieverse and after the events of last year's movie is to appear inThe Megazinelater this year, kicking off in September.

A page of art from this comic was previewed for retailers at the MCM London Comic Con this afternoon. Somehow, an image of the page has ended up on our servers. But don't look at me - I was off playing the Deadpool videogame. And Rich is in Phoenix. I guess it must have been elves.*

And now a different shot, bigger and blurrier and interesting, possibly, only to completists. But if it's on the server, I say to heck with it, let's do it.

So, what do you reckon? Did they get Karl Urban's chin right? Is that the Olivia Thirlby we know and love?

*I did see a few Elves at the ExCeL centre, prancing about between all of the bow-tied and often be-fezzed Doctors.

From a presentation by Diamond Comic Distributors UK at the retailer summit at London MCM today, they dropped some heavy numbers on the retailers present.

2012's sales were 10% up on 2011, to 8 million units imported into the UK. And 2013 is already a half a million up on this time last year. And graphic novel sales are 45% up this year as well.

And Diamond UK are Manchester Airport's biggest customer, in terms of all the comics and books they import. And their warehouse is 0.6 miles long...

They've also managed, even when importing internationally, to reduce shortages to 0.02%and damages to 0.09%.

They are cracking down on what they call "bedroom sellers", individuals who order comics directly from Diamond without actually being a shop, and making accounts prove they are proper stores. The Diamond Comic Distributors retailers website will be upgrading to match the USA version in terms of style, and US employees came over last week to agree to the changes.

Boom! is launching a new series in September called Hit, a new crime book written by Adventure Time's Bryce Carlson and Vanesa R. Del Rey with the cover below by Ryan Sook.

They had better hope it is also a Hit. Otherwise that title could be terribly ironic. But considering it's following the likes of Polarity, Suicide Risk, Six Gun Gorilla and Next Testament, the odds are good...

Look for them to talk about this more at the Phoenix Comic Con this weekend.

At the Diamond Retailer Meeting in London today, held alongside the MCM Expo, IDW announced that, as well as the Judge Dredd series, they are going to start to run Sinister Dexter comics next year, reprinting the classic 2000AD comic strip in US comic book format.

Initially modelled on Pulp Fiction, Sinister Dexter is a science-fiction gangster comic starring two hit men of "gun sharks" following the minutia?* of their lives, written by Dan Abnett and drawn by Andy Clarke.

The publisher also talked about recent Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sales rising 20%, that they are lining up more all ages books to follow the likes of My Little Pony, and talked about Mars Attacks Judge Dredd, Kevin Eastman's Zombie War and The Other Dead comics and emphasised, especially to the British audience, how well Judge Dredd was doing for them.

Also at the show, Panini representatives were asked if a deal similar as to that with Titan and Star Wars could be struck allowing comic stores to stock IDW's Doctor Who titles without having to resort to the grey market. Since IDW were at the show, the Panini representative promised to have a word.

The heart of the new Simpsons area at Universal is going to be the already existing ride, but the rest of it - at least judging from this official bit of concept art - will offer the park a multitude of ways to take more of your money. You can buy Duff Beer, Krusty Burgers and whatever lines the shelves of The Android's Dungeon and Baseball Card Shop.

And I don't mean yellow nerd dust.

Here's the press release from Universal.
The expansive, new area within Universal Studios will be anchored by the mega-attraction, The Simpsons Ride, and will allow guests to enter the world of The Simpsons like never before. It will be the only place in the world where guests can walk the streets of Springfield. It will include a brand-new outdoor attraction, places and foods pulled right from the show and two new Simpsons characters who will make their debut with the new area ? Krusty the Clown and Sideshow Bob.

And yes ? there will be Duff Beer, brewed exclusively for Universal Orlando.

For the first time ever ? anywhere ? fans will be able to walk down Fast Food Boulevard and visit the places that helped Springfield stake its claim as ?Shelbyville by the Sea.? They will be able to grab a Krusty-certified meat sandwich at Krusty Burger, snatch the catch of the day at the Frying Dutchman, get a slice at Luigi?s Pizza, go nuts for donuts at Lard Lad, enjoy a ?Taco Fresho? with Bumblebee Man and imbibe at Moe?s Tavern.

The new attraction ? called Kang & Kodos? Twirl ?n? Hurl ? will take ?foolish humans? on an intergalactic spin designed to send them into orbit.

I absolutely never want to get within twenty metres of Krusty the Clown.

I think they should hire Rich to do a shift at "Dungeon and Cards." That'd be cruel. Besides, we met when I was working behind the counter in a comic shop and it's time I had a chance to give him a taste of his own medicine.
