Also - way to reward those people buying the softcover reprints as they've come out, with no other option but to buy them all again at once if they want a case to hold 'em. Classy.

And isn't the larger question that you've SURELY made enough $ on all the differing re-releases to cover the cost of paying Neil what he wants to write Sandman Zero? Just think - you can do this all over again! Absolute Sandman Zero... Annotated Sandman Zero... ad infini-bloody-tum...

Rian Hughes Looks Again At The New DC Logo

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/05/logodc.jpg (http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/05/logodc.jpg)When...

When Bleeding Cool broke the story of the new DC logo, we were able to ask comic book logo designer Rian Hughes what he thought, and he was rather complimentary.

He's less complimentary now. He writes;
As I've mentioned, a good logo should first and foremost work "bare", preferably without any 3D rendering and Photoshop fanciness. Once you have that iconic, strong, basic logo, you can of course optionally add those effects later. If, on the other hand, those effects are actually part of the original logo, it vastly narrows its subsequent versatility. In real-world use, this (see pic) is the kind of results you get. A 'peel' made of stone/metal? Hmm. Visual treatments multiply and collide uncomfortably.

Now I've seen the logo on the actual comics, it disappoints in that context too, in what should be it's strongest application.

Sorry, chaps. I know you meant well.

Is Scott Snyder Giving Us The Biggest Batman Retcon Of All?

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/05/IMG_00551-332x350.jpg ...

Something has been tickling my head of late, reading the run up to the Court Of Owls. A theory, nothing more, not backed up by any actual evidence, that would be far too messy, that Scott Snyder is going to do something big to the legend of Batman.

We have been introduced to the Court, a set of Illuminati-like figures who run Gotham, and always have done, in the shadows, known by most only as a really creepy nursery rhyme that parents tell their children, and probably goes a long way to turning some of them into supervillains.

They also have a couterie of unstoppable, undead assassins, the Talons.

And Scott Snyder is starting to write them into the history of Gotham and the history of Batman. We know that the Waynes have caused the Owls trouble before. We know that the first Robin was intended to be recruited as a Talon. And the most recent issue of Batman gave us a glimpse into the Alfred Pennyworth legacy and showing us a little of what happened on the night that Thomas and Martha Wayne died.

That felt like the giveaway for me. What was when a tickle becam a full grown itch.

Are Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo about to reveal that Batman's parents were killed, not by a mugger looking for an easy mark, but by the Court Of Owls and their Talon assassins? And that in so doing, they created their own nemesis by inspiring the existence of The Batman?

Or is this nothing but fancy?

In other Night Of The Owls news, this week's Batman gives us a handy look at what's been going on in the other Batman books. Apart from Batwing. What's with that?

In Batman And Robin, we have young Damian leading a crack troop of soldiers. He's a natural.

While in Batgirl, she gets to fight a Talonette. Which struck me as the most pandering, silly, pointless thing...

And till I read it, and found a poignant, tender and complex treatise on the concept of "enemy".

A Few Thoughts Before Before Watchmen

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/05/1003063050-i00001-271x350.jpg ...

There now follows some randomish, vaguely connected thoughts about Before Watchmen.
"Did Alan Moore get screwed on his contract? Of course. Lots of people get screwed, but we still have Spider-Man and lots of other heroes." - Joe Michael Straczynski.?* Before Watchmen author.

""Kirby got a shitty contract too, so get over it" isn't a great tag line". - Ed Brubaker, Captain America author.

The Before Watchmen panel at C2E2 seems to have been a breaking point for some regarding the Before Watchmen controversy. Dan DiDio even joked that they'd had a lot less controversy than they expected. Both on the panel and to Aint It Coolsaying;
"But how is it any more wrong than the way any comics creators were treated, especially those who came out of the Golden and Silver Age? Worse than Jack Kirby, who couldn?t even get his art back in his failing years? Worse than Siegel and Shuster?"

I could envisage one of those screens that appears before a DVD commentary saying that the views of those involved did not reflect the views of the company.

Basically an employee of DC Comics, at a DC Comics event, told the assembled throng that the comics industry, including DC Comics, had acted immorally regarding their employees, but what are you going to do? It was that kind of charge that saw DC Comics cancel their contract with Chris Roberson to write for Fairest. Though it's a bit hard to do that with JMS when he's actually one of the guys writing Before Watchmen and when he was trying to defend DC.

Because this is the thing. JMS has gone out of his way to actively defend DC over Before Watchmen, when other creators have been seen to mumble half justifications. He's decided to grip the rose in his mouth, with the rose sticking, Tom Lehrer style, into his gums, and deserves considerable credos for screwing his courage to the sticking place. And that deserves some credit.

JMS stated that would not complain if Warner did Babylon 5 without him and against his wishes in similar circumstances. There was one moment though, a while ago when Mongoose licensed Babylon 5 novels, called them 100% canon and said they would be based on JMS's unused work on the series, he did have an issue. He wrote;
My involvement with the so-called B5 novels from Mongoose has been mis-stated and misrepresented, and the conduct of pillaging my scripts and posts without my knowledge or permission is dubious at best, dishonorable at worst.

He added;
They are licensed B5 fan fiction, nothing more, nothing less. And lots of folks like that stuff, and that's all to the good.

But do not say that they are "100% canon."

And I have no desire to become involved with these novels, and will not endorse them. It ain't the money, it ain't the Deal...I am for rent, but I am not for sale, because I have an obligation to the viewers of this show to be consistent and to always work for the utmost quality in our storytelling within the framework of a consistent universe.

If you want to create a pocket universe, feel free. But it's got nothing to do with the B5 universe insofar as I am concerned.

And leave my scripts and my notes out of it. I do not approve their use.

The two acts are not equitable, but they are comparable, in terms that this is a situation in which the original creator of a work has publicly divorced themselves of a spinoff project saying they won't be involved. Except that, as JMS points out, he never believed Babylon 5 was creator owned when creating it.

I talked with JMS earlier and asked how he would feel if Top Cow did the same with his Midnight Nation comic (Before Midnight Nation, by Mark Waid, say). He told me that this was a different matter as it was a creator owned book.

But here's the thing. So is Watchmen. People forget this, but technically it is a creator owned book. It was hailed as a creator owned book at the time, and DC certainly told Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons that it was. And that's what DC believed at the time. And they believed that's exactly what would happen. A quick check back to 1985 through Comics Journal back issues gives us this;

In 1985, it was not a work for hire comic, as some critics have stated that it is. This was from a convention panel the year before Watchmen was published. In 1987, before the book was concluded, it was becoming less clear.

Clearly they could...

Last week I told a story about how Watchmen prequels were originally planned back in the eighties, with Alan Helfer atached to Minutemen and Michael Fleisch to be offered Rorschach.

I'm told by people close to participants that this led to a meeting between DC publisher Jenette Kahn and Alan Moore that ended badly. There had already been issues over the comic, specifically the designation of Watchmen merchandise as "promotional" and thereby not triggering royalty payments to the creators, but the idea of prequels was raised again. Specifically a Rorschach comic, that Moore and Gibbons might create, and as extra recompense, DC would pass on those disputed funds. And that legally, DC could always get someone else to do it.

I'm told that this was the moment that saw Alan storm out, quitting DC Comics and Jenette regretting the situation. With Paul Levitz she then committed not to go down that road. But it was too late for Alan, he wasn't talking to anyone at DC save for Karen Berger and he stopped referring to the book as being creator owned. As it clearly was not, in any practical term. And, at least then, DC Comics weren't interested in renegotiating in order to retail Moore's services.

But after that point, there was a sea change at the publisher. Contracts, and DC's approach to them, were overhauled, and when Neil Gaiman wanted to renegotiate his Sandman deal a number of months into publication, DC agreed, despite it being a trademarked pre-existing DC property, and when Gaiman chose to end the series, the series ended. There have been a number of spinoff projects, but for each one, Gaiman consented. A flood of creators started signing creator-owned deals with the company, and launching new series that defined the imprint, such as Transmetropolitan, 100 Bullets, Stardust, Y The Last Man and Preacher.

Things have changed in the last few years however. While individual contracts always differ, the consensus is that the Vertigo creator owned contract was reined back in terms of its generosity, since the days of Stardust and Preacher. One version of the story goes that then-Senior VP of Legal Business Development at DC Comics, Paula Lowitt was boasting in a meeting about the richness of story at Vertigo comics, as a?*defense?*against the line losing money for DC Comics. Then-President CEO of Warner Bros Entertainment, Alan?*Horn asked why DC and Warner weren't developing more of the books into movies then. Lowitt mentioned, as one reason, that DC didn't necessarily control all of the media rights, and that was one reason why they got such great stories in the first place. Horn asked why they would create a contract that saw the company lose money on almost every book, hope to make it on the collections, and not control every media right going? And as a result of that meeting, Horn saw the contracts changed so that DC would have a stronger hold over how and where the comics get exploited.

That kind of attitude also led to the recent reorganisation of DC Comics, with its brands brought into the spotlight of commercial consideration. Including that damned Watchmen film, which after all the years spent in development hell, combined with the lawsuit payouts, still hasn't made money for Warners. The word came down from on high to exploit all commercial trademarks - and that included Watchmen.

It hasn't as yet, included Sandman. Neil Gaiman was at one point going to write a "Before Sandman" series called Sandman Zero. However, being confronted by a less than welcome contract, he made some suggestions that might make it financially beneficial for him to write it. DC said no. So Neil wrote The Graveyard Book instead.

There is a DC Alan Moore spinoff project that DC could publish without any objection from anyone. It's been written and thumbnailed out, and just waiting for DC-exclusive artist Gene Ha to be assigned to it. It's the second half of Top Ten Season Two by Zander Cannon and Ha.

And it's amazing.

I'm aware of a number now of prominent creators who have decided never to work for DC as a result of Before Watchmen. They do seem to see it as something different to Siegel and Shuster, more importantly that it is happening now, after the important creator battles were meant to have been won. Some see it as a betrayal.

It's not that of course. It's a business looking to make money where it can make money. The orders have come down from on high - the same kind of people who tightened up those Vertigo contracts. This is a Warners decision, the kind of decision that Paul Levitz kept at bay for so long. The next question is wonder is... what will they do next? Get the lawyers out for Before Sandman?

And, since it is Warners we're talking about, how about a remake of Citizen Kane, starring Jude Law? After all there are so many Kane stories still untold...

We knew that Lobo would return to the DC Universe in Deathstroke #9, the first of three monthly titles plotted by Rob Liefeld (and also drawn by him). But there was someone I wasn't expecting to see. Jim Lee's Zealot from the Wildstorm series WildCATS.

And yes, yes, yes, her hips are wider than her shoulders, etc etc etc, but this is an interesting twist, one Image Founder introduing the characters of another Image Founder into the DC Comics universe.

And she's not alone. As well as appearances of Voodoo, Fairchild, various Daemonites and Kherabim, and references to Team Seven in other DC comics, this week's Grifter, plotted by Liefeld, also brings us a certain Deathblow...

So whose next? Grunge? Majestic? Ladytron? Will we get that Tao/Constantine crossover that's been waiting an age to happen? UPDATE: Yup, Grunge and Warblade have been in Superboy...

So far the dcnu superman has failed to impress anybody and the sales are dramatically falling accordingly. My guess is that the post-flashpoint superman is not really appealing because he is not dark enough.

So superman needs to be edgier. Superman has always had an edge to him and it is preferable if we see that edge more often, like superman being willing to kill his enemies like dcnu wonder woman. Making superman grittier will definitely result in more readers of post-flashpoint superman.
Who do you think is best writer to bring out an edgy superman?

So we've all read the DC New 52 issue now right? Right? After all, Free Comic Book Day was yesterday, so you know. It's time to start asking exactly who the new wizards of the DC Universe , the creators of Shazam, and the damners of the Trinity Of Evil, are?

Um... well. See, this is where you need a pocket Mark Waid. Is that Black Bison and Super Friends' Samurai on the far right? A reworking of Amethyst? Any other suggestions?

And then there's the Trinity. Pandora, we know. Phantom Stranger we know. But the third... someone we should know? Or at least did?

Oh I see, it's not Black Bison after all, it's Beetlejuice.

The new Question! Created by Steve Ditko, probably no longer detective Vic Sage or Renee Montoya, now reinvented as a supernatural entity, for some crime or other.

And, as for Phantom Stranger... yeah, he's definitely got to be Judas Iscariot now, right? Although he seems a little pasty for the Middle East.

You know, I feel a little sorry for Judas. Any reading of the Gospels indicates that of all of Jesus' disciples, he was the one who believed Jesus was the Messiah. A Zionist, he wanted to provoke Jesus into bringing down the Roman Empire and tried to play him by forcing his hand. Hence the suicide when it all went wrong...

Yeah, you guys, stop judging the man.

Rumours Of DC Editorial Changes Circle Comics Industry

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/04/bw1.jpg (http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/04/bw1.jpg)In recent...

In recent weeks, David Hyde VP Publicity left DC Comics, Eddie Berganza was demoted to Group Editor from Executive Editor and Bobbie Chase was promoted to Editorial Director.

Some have seen this as Editor-In-Chief Bob Harras slowly pushing Eddie Berganza out, but nothing can be further from the truth. More reliable sources indicate the pair are as thick as thieves. Nevertheless there does seem to be some editorial reorganisation going around the company, but little being stated and announced. And gossip loves a vacuum.

A week-and-a-half ago, the hot rumour circling the industry was that Karen Berger, Executive Editor of Vertigo at DC, was being dropped or demoted by DC. And that Vertigo was being reintegrated into the rest of the DC publishing operation. I received multiple e-mails from high placed indivdual both within and without DC Comics to that effect, with Berger's appointment editing the DCU book Dial H seen as evidence of a change. However, it appears that the sound and fury signified... well very little right now. I'm told Karen was furious at the gossip as it reached her, and DC Comics gave me the following quote;
Vertigo is alive and well and an important part of DC Entertainment?s mission. ?*There have been no changes to Vertigo?s structure, its team or its priority within the company.

As it stands Karen appears not to be going anywhere, at least not this year. But Eddie's change in position does leave a gap that will probably be need filling. I'm told there are lots of meetings to this effect going on right now, and to expect an announcement shortly. Ish.

DC New Logo Part Of A Peel Trend Of 2012

Bleeding Cool was the first to bring you news that DC Comics was getting a new logo (http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/12/19/ready-for-dc-logo/), then...

Bleeding Cool was the first to bring you news that DC Comics was getting a new logo, then to show you what it was.

What we didn't know at the time was how prevalent that approach was.

Logo Lounge has been looking at trends in new company logos, and identified the "peel" as one of them. Here's the DC logo and three of its friends, as well as the companies that designed them.

They say;
2007 marked the graphic invasion of the peeling trompe l'oeil sticker. These graphic devices, usually referred to as violators, held a revered spot in the packaging industry and usually held copy such as "new and improved" or "30% more detergent." Often as simple as a laid-back shape on a round background, these designs gave the appearance of a sticker with poor adhesion. Used on web interfaces and print, alike the proliferation of these violators reached saturation levels by 2010.

The old faux tactile effect, which had completely run its course, is reincarnated now as a reveal. The effect is incorporated into identities set to unveil or expose an inner value or underlying trait. The rendered shadow implying that the peeling back of layers is occurring in real time gives you an immediate peek behind the scenes. DC Comics uses a family of solutions, each pulling back the curtain on a graphic representing a different super hero.

\"Gayness Is Built Into Batman\" - Grant Morrison In Playboy

The last issue of Playboy featured an original Walking Dead short story by Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlars. The new issue features an interview with Grant Morrison, talking superheroes

This is the kind of thing he says...
For me, Superman has the same problems we do, but on a Paul Bunyan scale. If Superman walks the dog, he walks it around the asteroid belt because it can fly in space. When Superman?s relatives visit, they come from the 31st century and bring some hellish monster conqueror from the future. But it?s still a story about your relatives visiting.

Gayness is built into Batman. I?m not using gay in the pejorative sense, but Batman is very, very gay. There?s just no denying it. Obviously as a fictional character he?s intended to be heterosexual, but the basis of the whole concept is utterly gay. I think that?s why people like it. All these women fancy him and they all wear fetish clothes and jump around rooftops to get to him. He doesn?t care?he?s more interested in hanging out with the old guy and the kid.

When Marston died in 1947, they got rid of the pervy elements, and instantly sales plummeted. Wonder Woman should be the most sexually attractive, intelligent, potent woman you can imagine. Instead she became this weird cross between the Virgin Mary and Mary Tyler Moore that didn?t even appeal to girls.

Okay, we?ve had all these varied versions of the Joker. Let?s say it?s the same person who just changes his head every day. I rationalized that by saying he?s supersane, the first man of the 21st century who?s dealing with this overload of information by changing his entire personality. I quite like him, because he?s a pop star?he?s like Bowie.

And lots of Invisibles stuff too...

I've been wondering if I should pick this up. Mainly because I only get a few comics a month and have been wanting to pick this up. Another factor in my judgement is the price. I usually only spend up to thirty dollars on comics. And last time I checked, this book was about fifty. So there's that.
Should I take the plunge?

Bleeding Cool have run a number of concerned comments on the quality of DC Comics' thick hardbacks of late, and how a number of them can be unreadable.

Dan DiDio promised that the concern had been noted and that things would be fixed by the time of the New Teen Titans Omnibus. So how did he do? Here's a direct comparison with the new Marvel Amazing Spider-Man Omnibus.

The verdict? It's better. A lot better than it used to be. But not quite up with Marvel Comics yet...

Let's have a quick look and further examination... with thanks to Dan Hart for assistance.

G.I. Combat: The War That Time Forgot by J.T. Krul and by Ariel Olivetti, and The Unknown Solider by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Gray and Dan Panosian. Note that The War That Time Forgot appears to be between modern day North Korea and the USA...
