Microsoft Announce Halo TV Series With Some Help From Steven Spielberg

During the unveiling of the new X-Box One - which is a curiously counterintuitive name - Microsoft also announced a TV series derived from Halo. That's not the only big name involved, however, as they've made a deal for Steven Spielberg to come onboard.

What exactly will he do? Probably what he did for the Transformers movies, or even something like Back to the Future or Gremlins. That's a) consult b) endorse and c) get mistakenly showered with credit.

Okay, c) didn't happen so much with the Transformers films.

Also in a position of influence are 343 Industries, the current developers of Halo games.

Now, we're calling this a TV series, and it is, I suppose, in just the sense that Netflix and Amazon have been making TV. But, as you'd expect, you're going to need an X-Box to watch it.

There were plans for a Halo movie, some years back, with Alex Garland amongst the writers, Peter Jackson producing and Neill Blomkamp directing. It didn't happen. Still, I can't help but wonder what words PJ and Spielberg might exchange about these projects.

There was also a leak, back in March, that Spielberg and Dreamworks were working on a Halo film. Turns out that wasn't quite right. Shame I didn't take more seriously at the time, really.

The X-Box One launch featured a video of Spielberg talking the new show up. That's yet to hit YouTube, but here's the general, all-purpose console launch clip.
Heaven help children at school who have imaginations. That will never do. But like Bleeding Cool we're pleased to see this letter from the school has the appropriate number of typos.
All in all, it's just another brick in the wall.
Seems so long ago now.

In the meantime, Colin Trevorrow was hired to direct, and got to work with his frequent collaborator Derek Connolly to do a rewrite of Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver's screenplay.

More recently, the project was put on indefinite hold and while Universal have stressed that they're supporting Trevorrow, we don't know why the project is paused, or when it will start up again.

So, in truth, we don't really know much about Universal's current plans. Any sort of rewiring could be going on, even at this very moment. So every little bit is interesting...

Sometime Park explorer Sam Neill was speaking recently to The Dominion Post,?*with thanks to Collider for the link,?*when he said of Jurassic Park 4, or whatever it will be called:
I'm told it's a big reboot, a total re-jig.

Now, he might be right, he might be wrong, or he might be right about what he means but is using the wrong language to express himself. I suspect it's the latter.

My hunch is that there will be no recurring characters - and therefore cast members - and so that counts as a reboot to Neill. Perhaps he needs to read up on the exact legal definition of the term.

The only other clue as to what the film will or won't contain comes from Trevorrow himself who was, at least before the hiatus, location scouting for somewhere to film scenes set on Isla Nublar.

I hope we'll hear more about Trevorrow's film soon. And I hope it's still Trevorrow's film when we do.

"The climactic arc of Andy Diggle?s first year comes to a shattering conclusion!"

Which would indicate subsequent years to come. However, from subsequent listings, that line seems to have disappeared.

IDW have a panel at this weekend's MCM London Expo. Tony Lee is on the panel.

The above appears to be Mark Buckingham's artwork from Doctor Who #13, for September.

Tony Lee is a big fan of Oscar Wilde. He has already written an Oscar Wilde/Sherlock Holmes crossover audio drama for Big Finish. I can't find a similar affection expressed online by Diggle.

I think Tony Lee is, once more, the ongoing writer of Doctor Who. Let's see what the weekend says...

Also, I have to wonder about the Prisoner Of Time anniversary series from IDW. A different Doctor each issue, twelve issues, they'll run out of Doctors. Unless...

Next weekend sees the MCM London Expo, with DC Comics and IDW in attendance, with the likes of David Hine, Frazer Irving, Emma Vieceli, Tony Lee and a metric tonne of small pressers. A place to discover some real finds. Also the only convention you can access by cable car. Park at the Millenium Dome and then whizz yourself over. I expect to see cable cars full of cosplayers.... say hi to Brendon Connelly if you see him.

The show is pushing this in the media as a teenager's thing. It certainly skews lower in age than most shows. And it is pushing the Deadpool game debut and Edgar Wright talking World's End.

On at the same time is the Phoenix Comic Con... naming guests would take forever but it will include Ben Templesmith, Brett Booth, Christy Marx, Colleen Doran, Ethan Van Sciver, Frank Cho, Greg Capullo, Greg Horn, Geof Darrow, JMS, Katie Cook, Kieron Gillen, Si Spurrier, The Allreds, Mike Mignola, Neal Adams, Peter David, Grace Randolph, Mike Mignola, Terry Moore and Whilce Portacio. Oh, and me.

Please try and make it for the Bleeding Cool Fan Awards if you can. Friday 6PM Room132, and there's a free exclusive Adventure Time cover variant if you attend... and do say hi!

The Image Expo has just added JMS and Kurtis Wiebe to the show. We should have a couple of Bleeding Coolers there.

The Midwest Media Expo is trying to sell itself as a different kind of convention next year, very much in the wake of Motor City experiences on Saturday, it seems.
Since 2005 we have rejected the model of "profits first, fan experience second", and we have actively taken steps to reject offers which we feel 'cheapen' the convention experience. When we created our first convention, Youmacon, we set the goal to produce an event WE would want to go to. We offer the very best in engaging special guests, interactive live events, free-to-play video game rooms, and high-quality attendee created programming. Now, 9 years later Youmacon has become one of the fastest growing conventions in North America. In 2010, we brought our philosophy of high-quality production and fan driven content to the niche of Steampunk, with the award winning World Steam Expo.

For the past few years, we've been working in the shadows to create a new event you in Spring of 2014. We can't tell you much yet, but we can tell you this:

Animation. Comics. Television. Movies. Gaming. Internet Culture. E-Sports.

Welcome to a new convention experience. It's not Comic Con. It's the Media Expo.

So what is it then?
The Midwest Media Expo is a popular culture event similar to most Comic Conventions. However, instead of focusing on comic books, M2X is a celebration of all popular media, including: Animation, Television, Movies, Video Games, Tabletop Gaming, Internet Culture, and eSports.

Balls to that, then.

Pretty Pictures: Patrick Gleason

?* (http://www.bleedingcool.com/?attachment_id=248989)Image:...

?*There's a lot to love about Patrick Gleason. He's been working at Marvel and Image, but mostly for DC. But it was the New 52 that really brought him into focus for me, for his work on Batman And Robin. Seen by some as an ancillary title to Batman Inc, filling in the numbers, it became an emotionally complex book and did as much for the character for Damian for me as any other comic.

And Gleason's evolved a style that's comparable to a looser, Brian Bolland, lots of fine, bold black detail, but also an ability to throw that to the wind where necessary. Such as the Batman image above.

He's started publishing sketches, commissions or different versions of his published work to his Tumblr and it's quite revelatory. By favourite has to be the steam punkish pearl-necklace-detector that never made it into the comic, but transformed Damian into Sherlock.

Ch'p and Dex Starr fighting over the corpse of G'nort....

Nymphomaniac Will Use CG To Put Its Stars Faces Into Hardcore Footage

Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2013/05/nymphomaniac-ensemble.jpg ...

Lars Von Trier has always had an interest in pushing film technology in pursuit of just the images and, importantly, the production practices he wants and needs.

Breaking the Waves was revolutionary in its combination of low-light filming and post-production colour correction, and sowed the seeds of what later became the Dogme movement.

Dancer in the Dark shot some sequences with one hundred small, low-cast cameras running simultaneously.

Dogville patchworked images from multiple cameras into seemingly coherent aerial views, while much of the rest of the film was shot with a device mounted on Von Trier's head.

And The Boss of it All apparently employed the computer-controlled Automovision system, randomly twisting parameters of the cinematography.

Now, just as I'd expect, he's using tech in an unusual way once again with Nymphomaniac.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the film's producer Louise Vesth gave some idea of how Charlotte Gainsbourg, Shia LaBeouf and Uma Thurman, amongst others, will be shown engaging in hardcore sex on screen.
We shot the actors pretending to have sex and then had the body doubles who really did have sex and in post we will digital impose the two. So above the waist it will be the star and the below the waist it will be the doubles.

And I dare say this would get far trickier if the actors weren't to interact "in that way" solely below the waist. I suppose this limits the kind of acts Von Trier can portray explicitly - and I imagine the limitation has caused him some frustration.

And it could also limit the kind of camerawork, depending on the kind of budget they're spending on VFX. How mobile is the viewpoint going to be in this film, I wonder? I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of tableau, something like the overtures to Antichrist and Melancholia.

Nymphomaniac will be released in two parts, each of them in both hardcore and softcore versions, later this year.

The next picture from Ben Wheatley is as different from Sightseers as that was from Kill List. A Field in England isset in the middle of the English Civil War. This excerpt from the official blurb will explain why I'm calling it "psychadelic."
Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.

There's certainly a rather foreboding tone to this trailer, and it's not such a surprise that they were able to get a positive quote from Nic Roeg for the poster.

Film 4 and Warp X have cooked up a pretty daring release plan for this film. As well as rolling into UK cinemas on July 5th, it's also going to be made available on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD and premiered on television, for free, on Film 4's channel.

To incentivise you into seeing the film in the cinema - if you don't consider that it's own reward - Picture House cinemas will be hosting a Q&A with Wheatley and his cast, and screening that live across their chain with one of the July 5th sessions.

I know that I'm opting for the big screen experience, but I'd be curious to learn how the viewership and sales break down across the board.
