Image: http://www.bleedingcool.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/05/jobs-isaacson.png (http://www.bleedingcool.com/?attachment_id=160211)No Ashton...

No Ashton Kutchers allowed.

Sony are (now officially) having Aaron Sorkin write the screenplay for Steve Jobs, an adaptation of Walter Isaacson's hugely best-selling biopic of the Apple magnate. There's no more information - no clue on who will star, or who will direct. I'll take some shots in the dark, though.

Sorkin himself is looking to get some directing credits, but the plans are that he'll start with The Politician, adapted from Andrew Young's book about John Edwards. Could Jobs be his sophomore effort? Seems a little unlikely that Sony would wait that long.

Of course, many will be hoping for a Social Network reteam and the return of David Fincher, though I think I'd prefer Rob Reiner, director of previous Sorkin pictures For a Few Good Men and The American President take the reins. I can't imagine Reiner would be too enamoured of a lot of Jobs' attitudes, and that could make for some high drama.

Now. Who's up for a little wager. There's a hunch I have that says they're going to cast Tom Cruise as Jobs. Anybody want to take that bet? It could even be a three-way Good Men reunion.

More news in due course.

What Can We Tell From The First Anchorman 2 Poster?

Almost nothing. The year the film is coming out. The year of this poster's copyright. The lack of a 2 in the title, despite what I already said. The subtitle. That some people wear the same shoes and trousers quite a lot. That there's no space for Christina Applegate - not even her feet.

Incidentally, she's not in the first teaser trailer either. Still, they haven't even started filming yet. Maybe she'll turn up for a bit. If not, I know that I'll miss her.

Now there will be some spoilers in this piece, I'll try to avoid all the big ones, but you are going to find out who wins between Gambit and Captain America, there's no getting around it. Sorry.

So, anyway, a lot of this week's Avengers Vs X-Men comics could just have squee written all over them in big letters. But it depends which of the comics you read.

For example, there are those who love to see Captain America's bare chest, his uniform ripped asunder, especially in close contact with Gambit. There's slashfic written about much less. But what you get to see depends on which book you read. Take this scene from Avengers Vs X-Men #4.

All well and good right? But if you read the same scene, expanded in Versus #2, some of you may get a lot more than that. And a Captain America who changes his dialogue because of it.

And read in conjunction with Uncanny X-Men #12, it does rather give such scenes added meaning...

And for those who just find this all a little too homosexualesque for their tastes, don't worry, Uncanny X-Men comes to your rescue there as well by hooking up Namor with... Hepzibah. Again., Kieron Gillen just finds the most fascinating and perfect couplings.

I dunno, I still think Namor is more suited to The Thing. And of course, the levels of nudity will probably differ depending on which version of the story you end up reading.

Clothes also seem to be an issue for Thor in Avengers and Avengers Vs X-Men. In fact, considering last week's Secret Avengers, continuity has gone to hell here. This is not a normal concern for me, but when reading the same events told in different comics in the same week and they seem to happen very differently, it makes my head itch, and not in a good way. Simply put I cannot reconcile Thor's attack on the Phoenix with diffrerent clothes and equipment and circumstances, especially given the timeline involved. You may cope better than I. It may need a Hitch Hikers Guide II bird to help me through it.

Added to last week's timeline seeming screwups at the Jean Grey school, the only recommendation I can give is don't read all these books at the same time. Wait a while between issues and maybe you'll forget the bits that don't gel together., and you can get back to squeeing about Hepzibah.

Thankfully Avengers Academy sidesteps all this by having a completely separate set of characters who didn't get involved with the narrative, they just echo its generalities.

And we actually get a comic about something in the process. Who'd have thought?

New Sherlock Holmes iPad App Tries To Take Blu-Ray Supplements "To The Next Level"

The big new idea in Blu-ray special features is that of "the second screen experience," something that you'll run on your phone or tablet in sync...

The big new idea in Blu-ray special features is that of "the second screen experience," something that you'll run on your phone or tablet in sync with the movie playing on your TV screen. This week, Warner Bros. have released Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows on disc, and the iPad extra through the app store. I've been playing around with both to see what they've managed to pull off.

The idea of a second screen experience, as I understood it, would be that my iPad would provide the secondary content. It seems implicit in the title. I would expect to fire up the player, link that and the iPad to the same wifi network, and have them communicate. I would expect the iPad to then provide content that supplemented what I could see on the main screen.

But that's not quite it.

The link-up worked as I expected. I made sure both the player and the iPad were connected to my wifi router. I opened the app, and chose the appropriate option on the Blu-ray menu. But then, everything was on its head.

The primary screen was the iPad. Seems all wrong.

I was expecting a split-experience where I, with the tablet, could enjoy some supplements while Mrs. Connelly just watched the TV and saw the film, fuss free. Instead of there being picture in picture and pop-up trivia obscuring the movie, I thought, this would all be parked on my iPad, where I could enjoy it and interact with it without annoying her.

But, actually, the iPad was being used for, largely, a stand alone supplement that, occasionally, could be used to cue certain bits of video on the Blu-ray.

Immediately this was a disappointment. My preconceptions about how the whole experience would go down had been dashed. But... if I accepted it for what it was, did this supplement have anything to offer?

The structure of the thing is simple enough that you'll find your way around easily. The top menu offers five themed areas to choose from, in whatever order you'd prefer.

Motive: Genesis of the Story.

The Events: Interactive Scene Breakdowns & Script Explotation

Persons of Interest

Scene of the Crime: Europe in the 1890s

Surveillance: Tracking Game of Shadows

And each of these offers you more options, allowing you to dig into these areas, mining the various bits and pieces they've written and filmed for you. The best bits, I think, are the annotated storyboard pages, and the section about Conan Doyle. I enjoyed both of those a good deal.

In effect, it's like a new-fangled tablet-era version of website, something you can roam and enjoy at your own pace.

Indeed, seeing as the app is available as a free download and you don't even need to link to the Blu-ray to use it, the whole thing is less of a supplement than a separate experience that will help you better indulge in Guy Ritchie and company's take on Holmes, the history and original creation of the character, and lots of context for the story and setting of A Game of Shadows. If nothing else, it provides an enriching context.

But this isn't the second screen experience I was waiting for, it's something else entirely, and considerably less innovative than I had hoped.

Incidentally, there's something called Maximum Movie Mode on the Blu-ray too. It's a visual commentary that runs for not all but a good part of the film. There's a lot of picture-in-picture stuff, but the best bits are filmed comments from Robert Downey Jr., cracking wise and, oftentimes, taking credit for the film's better ideas.

Not only did Downey come up with some of the film's best plot points and twists, as he'll tell you here, he also says that he's already working on the script for part 3. He's a confident chap, to say the least, and his appearances on the Blu-ray supplements were easily my favourite, and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.

Here are a series of screen captures from the iPad to give you some idea of how polished the Holmes app looks, and what kind of material it contains. There are timelines, video clips - all of which can be played full screen , storyboards, pages of script and a lot more.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is available on DVD and Blu-ray now, and the app can be downloaded from the app store. They don't need each other, and they don't really link together well, but both offer a good deal of amusing, engaging extra material for fans of the series, or fans of Holmes and Downey, like myself.

Now then... who's going to make a second screen app that really works?

Despite the legalities of the case it remains a fact that at the beginning of the investigation Joe Simon was extremely adamant that the art in question had never been returned to him by DC Comics. There is also the changing stories of how the art ended up on the open market, first the story that the art was gifted by Joe to a person he claimed he never met, then the art was sold by Joe's daughter to a former boss, who may, or may not have harassed her in the workplace. Also, who sold the art and where is that art today?
DarthWatch: British comedian Peter Serafinowicz will announce a new comic book at Kapow this weekend, with an established Batman artist. You may know Serafinowicz from his comedy shows, impersonations of Paul McCartney and... the voice of Darth Maul. But I'll always remember him from this photo I took of him at the Iron Man premiere, with his brother helping him out on the Zaphod Beeblebrox impression.

So... what are the odds that it will appear in CLiNT?
There's no story there, really. But trust good ol' Bleeding Cool to make one out of fairy dust and gossamer, like lightning, ten months later. Bless their cotton socks.(Rich, I'm just teasing. I distinctly remembered what it was like being a Christian, falling in love with a woman, and not feeling like anyone could possibly relate to what I was going through. The Christian friends didn't get the "gay part," and the gay friends couldn't fathom the "Christian part." My mom purchased a few books recommended by her church friends, but unfortunately (and this may or may not be surprising to you), they were not very affirming or encouraging. Part of the inspiration for my comic stemmed from the experience of just wanting to know that someone, somewhere, knew what I was feeling.

I don't worry too much about avoiding spoilers. It sort of goes with the territory. Besides, in our modern 'always-connected' world it's more or less impossible anyway.

We're a long way from era of The Likely Lads.

But all the same, I'm not sure I'm glad I saw this super-trailer for The Amazing Spider-man.

Don't get me wrong, It's brilliant. I just can't help thinking I've seen all the best sequences in the movie now.

Still. If you like that kind of thing, and I know lots of you do, here it comes....

And yeah...SPOILERS.
And a final bit of business before we get onto today's trending topic list -- latenight BCers will have noticed some periodic scheduled maintenance over the past couple weeks, which is now concluded. Basically, we've done some much-needed hardware upgrades to carry us through some upcoming expansion plans. BC forum iconographer Rootfireember explains the technical details:

Aaron Haarfeld of A Comic Shop in Florida writes;

SAGA #3 was the best third issue ever printed! OMG! I'm offering money back on all 3 issues of SAGA at A Comic Shop! It doesn't matter if you don't like sci-fi or fantasy, this story and the characters are totally unique and foreign while being more human and relatable than your average slice of life comic! Try it!

Thief of Thieves continues to give this book depth and heart. Secret Service isn't your average Millar World book, but has his DNA all throughout. I think he's trying to write something with more gravitas for the legendary Dave (Watchmen) Gibbons.

Justice League seems to be building toward Trinity War already and Night of Owls is intense. If you're not reading Nightwing with Snyder's Batman you're doing it wrong!

Oh yeah, and Avengers vs X-Men #4 is here ending the first arc with a bang. Also,VS #2 is pure fun: great art, fun facts, face punches!

Enjoy some of these books! I loved all of them for different reasons!

Last week in comics:

Image:...

Dr Manolis Vamvounis writes for Bleeding Cool.

Last week in comics:

WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #10 alone makes up for everything that?s sucked in AVX so far. The major mutant players come together at the Jean Grey school and actually behave like the characters we know for a change. Cyclops and Wolvie have an insightful discussion about the events so far, illuminating both sides of the argument - heck, INTRODUCING the argument for the first time, beyond the snikts and zakts, since the start of this crossover.

Wolvie?s X-Men pick sides that make sense according to each character?s history and personal connections. Then I presume they all cross back into the main series where they can once more behave like mindless plot drones. The Rachel / Phoenix connection is finally acknowledged in a way that is organic to the character instead of nerdy. Iceman continues to shine through as the true rock (iceberg?) of the team.

Similarly, X-MEN LEGACY #266 examines the tension between the two ?warring factions?, the uncomfortable racist undertones, and how easily these can escalate into a full-fledged conflict against the better judgement of either side, while still staying true to these characters and their history. I?d advise people to skip the main series completely and just read these amazing tie-ins from the Wolverine line of X-books.

So this is really happening. In NEW AVENGERS #26, Leonardo Da Vinci is visiting the mythical K?un Lun to meet the young Iron Fist girl who would be the first human host for the Phoenix Force. Bendis is channeling a healthy mix of Hickman and Fraction, but still keeping it woefully slow-paced. And how misleading was that cover? Danny Rand plus Hope equals Iron Finix.

That didn?t take long. Agent Coulson and Black Fury (yeah, I?m going with that) are making their first crossover appearance behind SHIELD Director Daisy Johnson (when did THAT happen?) in SCARLET SPIDER #5 of all places. Now if we could retcon poor Kaine out of that ridiculous onesy...

In TRIO #1 John Byrne attempts to introduce his creator-owned/aped version of the Fantastic Four, but takes one too many wrong turns along the way. Being so blunt as to actually name them One, Two and Three or alternatively Rock, Paper and Scissors, after the inspiration for their powers, is the big one. Imagine if the FF had been namedWater, Earth, Fire and Air, or One through Four. The cheap photoshop texture layers used to color the skin of Three/Rock? don?t help the situation. I do dig the creepiness of Paper?s appearance and powers, Byrne manages to tweak her appearance in very subtle and innovative ways.

In GREEN LANTERN #9, Geoff Johns -finally- reveals the secrets of the Indigo Tribe?s language, and their origins. It?s a true shocker, packing enough punch to set this series back on track after the meandering past year since the September reboot. No spoilers here, go read for yourselves!

I might be reading too much into things, but Chris Roberson seems to be sneaking in some cheeky meta commentary aimed at DC in the pages of I ZOMBIE #25, as he prepares for his last few issues of the book.

MIND THE SPOILERS...

DEATHSTROKE #9 and GRIFTER #9 mark the first issues of Rob Liefeld?s ?hostile? takeover as writer/artist and the introduction of Zealot, Deathblow and Lobo into the DCNuverse. We all know Rob can?t draw anymore (no use denying it at this point), but can he write? GRIFTER is an ok read and a beautiful book, a vast improvement over the first few issues, surely in no small part thanks to scripter Frank Tieri and the talented Scott Clark on art. DEATHSTROKE... is all Rob.

I?m still baffled why DC would not support one of their best creative teams (Higgins and Bennett) on this book, but choose to replace them with someone like Rob, putting out an infinitely inferior book as a result. It?s the same approach as Higgins?, but sloppier, less self-aware and more ?9-year old playing with crayons?. Um, no offense, Rob.

Yes, that is most certainly Thor, God of Thunder, grease monkey. After last week?s EXILED #1, kicking off the crossover between NEW MUTANTS and JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY, many Asgardians have once again lost their selves into amnesiac human identities. Some more entertaining than others. This crossover is off to a great start with JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #637, organically weaving together elements from two titles that would have at first glance seemed an ill fit for each other.

DC?s various inter-title crossovers aren?t faring as well this week. Like whatever that was between SUICIDE SQUAD #9 and RESURRECTION MAN #9. Resurrection Man guest-starring on Suicide Squad provided the assassin team with a mindless, unkillable foe. Suicide Squad?s presence however, was very disruptive RM?s mystery/horror setting. In the original run of RM any ?mainstream? super-hero cameos always served as some snide commentary on the nature of the genre. Here there?s no twist, it?s all sales- and editorial- driven. What is even more annoying is the lack of coordination between the writers, leading to a character that was freshly killed in the first book, turning up alive in the following part of the crossover. Or are Resurrection Man?s powers contagious now?

NIGHT OF THE OWLS runs through three Bat-titles this week, and it?s all the writers can do to try and instill some oomph into stories that are basically paint-by-numbers ?bat-character versus owl-character to protect important city figure character? over and over and over again. In BATMAN #9, Bats rocks the new furnace armor in a sub-zero battle in the owl-infested Bat-cave, featuring a good number of interesting twists and action beats. In BATGIRL #9, Babs is pitted against a female Talon (ugh, really now? typecast much) with a fascinating backstory connected to real events. In BATMAN AND ROBIN #9, Damian gets to assert himself over a troop of soldiers in the field in one of his most shining character moments. And they all get to kick some owls. Boo, we hate owls. Yay, bats.

Similarly, the TEEN TITANS/LEGION LOST/SUPERBOY crossover titled ?THE CULLING? immediately loses steam after its entertaining opening salvo last week. SUPERBOY #9 and LEGION LOST #9 sort of merge together into one gooey mess of a battle scene. The interesting bits are the little teases about Kid Flash?s new origins, and his and the villain Harvest?s connection to the 31st century.

She-Hulk gets tailed (that was the best I could come up with on such short notice) in AVENGING SPIDER-MAN #9 by guest-creators, the Immonens, in an issue filled with pussy cats and bad puns. Shulkie seems like a generic choice for a guest-star this issue, the way she was handled, but it?s a fun, dense plot that doesn?t feel rushed. Who knew we could still get those in 20 pages.

In ULTIMATE COMICS X-MEN #11, the Sentinels go renegade, slaughtering thousands of humans in the greatest terrorist attack on the U.S. in the history of the Ultimate Universe... and it all plays out inside two pages of story. If you?re going to bore the reader with such a tragically decompressed (some might say deflated) narrative this whole past year, try to at least make a big splash of it when you need to. Having the President describe the tragedy is not the same as actually showing it. Are we sure it is the real Nick Spencer writing this?

Just look at his other book out this week: MORNING GLORIES #18 outs one of its main cast members in an exquisitely intimate (and steamy!) love scene, the likes of which no one has dared ?do? before in mainstream, non-genre comics. No more spoilers here.

DEADPOOL #54, the finale of the DEAD storyline, sees Wade Wilson lose his healing factor but gain back his handsome Brad Pitt-esque looks. Dead Gorgeous!

UNCANNY X-FORCE #25 upgrades the Omega Red concept (Russian albino tentacle porn) for a new generation with ?Clan Omega?, the genetically engineered clones/kids of the original. ?Kid Omega? was already taken, you see.

Oh yeah, and the final page of AVENGERS ASSEMBLE #3 sees the return of Thanos, just in time for a certain tentpole movie tie-in. The character had an amazing run under DnA in their cosmic line of titles, I?m a bit pensive about Bendis? approach, especially after the inane bait-and-switch that launched the most recent Avengers run. Fool me once...

BEST ART THIS WEEK!

Max Fiumara has come a long way since the hatchet job that was his mainstream work in Infinity Inc. Even on an inventory-type fluff story like HULK SMASH AVENGERS #2, he shines through with beautifully stylised and exaggerated figures and a soulful fairytale energy. The little trick Jean-Francois Beaulieu introduces here with the Vision being coloured directly from the pencils is something I hope more artists and books copy, the visual effect is very appropriate to the character?s personality and nature.

GOREWATCH!

There?s something profoundly disturbing about the way the usually meek and cartoonish style of Paul Pelletier takes to scenes of ghastly splatter in WOLVERINE #306. We?ve seen Wolvie get his face melted off countless times before, but this eerie attention to detail, the charred flesh patterns, the bit of exposed bone, the regenerating eyeball later on... EEK!

MARVEL ZOMBIES DESTROY #1 does NOT have as much gore. What it lacks in graphic violence, it makes up in obscure Marvel heroes (Battlestar! Red Raven! Blazing Skull! Flexo!??) and the dynamic duo of Howard the Duck and Dum Dum Dugan versus invading Nazi Zombies in World War II!

Going for the ?little girl getting graphically eviscerated by wolves? card on the opening sequence of your very first issue is a daring move, and one that NIGHT OF A 1,000 WOLVES #1 milks for every drop of horrific ambience.

DAN THE UNHARMABLE #1 opens up with an even more graphic panel of a mutilated body, a tad too gruesome and detailed for the needs of this humour book. The crotch-punching action of the unflappable and unkillable loser of a protagonist, Dan in the rest of the issue was more appropriately slapstick.

I read over 29 books this week, and TEN of them were part of some crossover or other. DC alone had THREE crossovers in one week. WOLVERINE AND THE X-MEN #10, along with X-MEN LEGACY #266 are the shining examples of the heart and attention to characters that is needed to make these big events work. NIGHT OF THE OWLS is impressive in the attention to detail needed to coordinate the timeline of events for Batman and his cast during that long night. SUICIDE SQUAD and RESURRECTION MAN were just shameful.

Only one valuable lesson this week:

Keep Rob Liefeld off your favourite book! And go buy the first trade of DEATHSTROKE, it?s one of the most action-packed and explosive, fun books of the year.

If ever it was worth going to a university purely for the speech at your commencement ceremony, that learning establishment would be Syracuse University and the man giving the speech would be Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin.
