Default Doctor Who 50th Anniversary To Be Broadcast In 3D, Also Play In Cinemas

It's not technically the Doctor Who movie thatSteven Moffatseems so sceptical about but the BBC have announced that the 50th anniversary special episode will be screened in cinemas. This is because the BBC are producing it in 3D and are fully aware that not everybody has the correct tech at home.

It's not yet clear if the cinema screenings will be timed to coincide with the TV broadcast, precede it or follow it. My best guess is that they'll be synchronised.

I can already sense the fun they're going to have with the TARDIS. Some nice shots into that open door were probably the first idea on the table.

Also: sink plungers, coming at ya. Surely?

Moffat is still scripting the episode, and production is set for the spring. He said:
It's about time. Technology has finally caught up with Doctor Who and your television is now bigger on the inside. A whole new dimension of adventure for the Doctor to explore.
This will be the second 3D drama commission by the BBC after Mr. Stink and that was a fair job for sure.

Should you want to watch Doctor Who in 3D at home all you'll need is a 3D TV set and some pairs of the appropriate glasses - the BBC broadcast their stereo stuff for free on their Freeview HD channel. It's the only non-subscription 3D out there.

For a taste of the Beeb's last 3D experimentation with this show, watch the following. It's only in cyan-magenta style, I'm afraid, despite YouTube's ability to handle better stereo systems.

...Every time I see a production like this, I keep thinking about 3-DVO, and how despite all the care and prep the Spuds put into that one, to this day Mark, Jerry and the Bobs still think it was the worst production they ever worked on.

Maybe it's just my really bad prescription, but when it comes to 3D I just can't see it...

Just release It on Blu ray 3D. I will be displeased if it doesn't happen.
