Default Doctor Who Christmas Special The Snowmen Is Our Most Recorded TV Show Ever

The final BARB ratings for Christmas day have revealed that The Snowmen, this year's Doctor Who festive special, scored 9.87 million viewers either live or via recording. That put it in third place for the day behind Call the Midwife at number 1 and The Royle Family at number 2.

This figure doesn't include iPlayer numbers, which are yet to be released, or the 915,000 who watched the repeat screenings on BBC 3.

What's also rather interesting, though, is that The Snowmen was watched live by 5.75 million of the full 9.87 million score, meaning 4.12 million recorded it. That makes it the UK's most recorded TV show ever.

This beats the previous recorded of 4.11 million recording a single show - which was actually already held by Doctor Who and the episode The Impossible Astronaut.

It seems like the BBC might have a problem with their scheduling of the show if so many are keen to record and watch it later. Would they get better ratings in total if they kept the program to the 7-to-8 time slot, or maybe even 8-to-9?

I guess they only way we'd find out would be if they'd try this, but I'm not expecting they will. This is a "family show" and the BBC want it in a "family timeslot."

I'm anticipating a very high iPlayer result for this episode too - don't be surprised to see me reporting on another record once those figures come in.We could see the full total reach 12 million or beyond.

Add to this the high Appreciation Index scores by which the BBC market research their output and I think we can feel very sure that Doctor Who won't be headed for the axe again any time soon.

I can only assume this doesnt account for the BBC:A numbers as of right now?
I watched it and enjoyed the hell out of the episode. A moderate jumping on point if you will that introduced some of his supporting cast and gives viewers who wish to continue their own starting point for the series.

Yeah, this is UK numbers, so the colonies don't count.

I don't think that recording it to watch later reflects a problem, it's just reflective of the way people watch TV these days. I watch very little live unless I'm surfing to kill time.

I don't think it matters what time it's on on Christmas Day - some people are just going to record it rather than watch it live. Far too much happening on Christmas Day to carve out a solid uninterrupted hour for a TV show in a lot of families.
Hey you! You should read The Cynic's Survival Guide To Disney Animated Classics on my blog. I would, if I was in your position.

    Bingo.

In the slot it got, far too many people were either out and about, playing with toys, talking with guests or just having their tea. Though I am mildly surprised that it wasn't out-recorded by Downton, given that recording is a good way to dodge the (*&^ing adverts in that....

What I think it does maybe show is that Dockeroo is a show people want to be able to sit down and actually watch attentitively as opposed to just catching it on the fly...

    Cheers

The ridiculous 5pm time slot was unhelpful. Precisely coincided with my family's Christmas dinner. No wonder Christmas TV ratings were so poor this year. Abysmal scheduling.

Um, well whatever time it was, it was bound to conflict with someone's dinner.

    Was perfect timing for me!

"Colonies"? Over two-hundred years solo, and sixty-plus-years the world's leading superpower. You need to let it go....

Amen. My problem is commercial television. I refuse to watch commercials. I pay a cable bill and that's all I need to pay to watch their television. Thus, I download or Netflix everything, cutting the commercials out completely. That's the same insane business model that says you have to pay a monthly fee to watch shows on HULU, but also have to sit through commercials? Fuck THAT noise. And fuck greedy corporations.

Sorry. Like Joe Kalicki after too much bourbon at a family holiday, that just came out...

But....he just got through saying it was the most recorded show in history. How can that be "poor ratings"? I would think that's a sign of extremely solid ratings. Just the way people watch entertainment, now. At least, the stuff they want to pay attention to, anyway. Anyone can watch a reality show and talk all the way through it. DOCTOR WHO is a drama/action story that needs to be watched and appreciated.

At least, that's how I took the article...

Sort of sounds like those people in our south calling the Civil War the War of Northern Aggression and calling us all Yankees.
