Default Neil deGrasse Tyson Finds Krypton For Superman

The New York Post reports that media profiled astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, at the request of DC Comics, has found a candidate for Krypton.
The ?real? Krypton is in the Corvus constellation, about 27.1 light years from Earth, orbiting the red dwarf star LHS 2520, Tyson determined.

The star, which is smaller and cooler than our sun, can be seen at right ascension 12 hours, 10 minutes, 05.60 seconds, and declination 15 degrees, 04? 15.66.
Tyson was asked to help with Action Comics #14, out this week, in which Tyson will also appear, as Superman tracks down the location of his home planet. Which is just far enough for the light from the exploding planet to reach Earth in the present.

...Bah. Elliot S! Maggin found it over 36 years ago. Krypton orbited Antares. And besides not only is LHS 2520 a red *dwarf* - Krypton has always orbited a red *giant* - it hasn't even been a candidate for any of the planet finder studies.

Oh yeah, I know. Krypton's not there anymore, so the planet finders wouldn't find anything, but the point still stands that Tyson missed, and that's the fact that he picked the wrong sized star.

I like this idea for a backup. Getting kind of bored of the Sholly Fisch stories anyway.

Well, that depends on how far away it was and of Kal-El's pod had an FTL drive or if it only got close to light speed. If it had an FTL drive then it could have gotten to Earth in time for Kal to grow up, become Superman, and have the question posed to an astronomer who found light from the star before Krypton's explosion. If the pod was a "slow ship" and Kal's subjective time slowed while it traveled to Earth, then no matter the distance...since not only was his ship traveling slower than light but also you'd need twenty-odd years before people started looking...you'd only find an empty spot where it was.

That's assuming Tyson's not using a Mobius Chair to fly around the universe confirming these things, which I wouldn't rule out.

EDIT: Just read the article more clearly. "Which is just far enough for the light from the exploding planet to reach Earth in the present." So it did have an FTL drive.

Also, is Tyson the new John Munch, tying together science-fiction from different universes? I ask because he now links DCnU with Stargate: Atlantis.

Don't mistake being quirky for not being a bad ass. In his field, there are very few badder than him. He just refuses to be a buzz kill, like alot of scientists tend to be.

Tyson is one of my heroes. We need more scientists & intellectuals like him in the Black community. The fact that he comes from my same home town (Bronx, NY) and spends alot of time whenever he can in the community says an awful lot to me.

Nothing about Tyson is new. He's been in his field for years, and has accomplished quite a bit. The fact that peopl are unaware of him still, speaks highly to the fact that there aren't enough Blacks in this field

I'm also once again grateful to DC, for choosing to feature him in their comics. I'm sure that was one of his childhood dreams.

I know who Neil deGrasse Tyson is, what I meant was he's starting to popup as himself in fiction: Mo'Nique, Stargate Atlantis, The Big Bang Theory, and now DC. Much like John Munch bridged a lot of shows, I can see Tyson transforming himself into something of a Metafictional Metron.

He just needs a cool chair.
