Default DC Continues To Support The Vertigo Relaunch

This month sees DC Vertigo launch four new comics, Fairest, Saucer Country, The Deadwardians and Dominique Laveau: Voodoo Child, in something that no one else but me is calling the Vertigo Relaunch.

And while it may not be as glamourous and newsworthy as the New 52, DC are still doing what they can to back the new Jtitles. Traditionally, DC Vertigo titles have a burst of sales when a book is launched that then dwindle to a relatively unsustainable state as interested customers move onto more satisfying trade paperback collections. But without those monthly comics sales, the titles can't be sustained.

So, now extended into its third month, May, DC Comics are giving retailers extra discount when ordering the titles increasing the profits that retailers make on the books by around 30 to 40%. This gives retailers added incentives to order and hand sell the monthly books to customers over and above other titles on the shelf...

The cover to Saucer Country #2 there. Hey, is that a bit of a Swipe File for the Conservative Party poster of 1997?

See, this is where I think DC should be pushing digital sales. Vertigo fans in comic shops for the most part will buy these books regardless. If Vertigo had some additional sales via digital means it might help keep the titles profitable enough to justify continuing them while publishing TPB collections.

I agree with Mike H. Plus, the Vertigo audience seems to be the ideal type to expand the digital marketplace most publishers drool over.

DC also seems to have designs on expanding the Vertigo line further, too. Andy Diggle tweeted last week that he pitched a book to an editor and got it approved same-day. That was also the same day Matt Fraction tweeted teasing about asking when he should announce his new Icon book...

We don't know anything about either of those other than those tweets, though.

Why are they always doing new stuff? Why can't they just publish more old things?

Vertigo is not it's own universe so not at all! Vertigo titles are mostly creator owned so DC wouldn't be able to do it if they wanted to. DC keeps Vertigo separate as a place for their mature and more adult titles.

Well, yes and no. Wildstorm DID merge with the regular DCU. But Vertigo really only merged the characters that *left* the DCU in the first place. That's why Superman's not showing up to fight Mister Dark in Fables or anything like that.
